People who live in Ireland(If any)

Recommended Posts

Hey I live in ireland. Im orignally Welsh but have lived here my whole life and theres still just something about the irish people i dont understand. and i want to know has anyone experienced the same problem either here or Anywhere.

People who cant see the bigger Picture... I live in cork and although i dont want to generalise Almost everyone i encounter is small minded there unable to see things for what they are at face value. EG. I have seen this girl around for awhile now and she works in Mc Donalds. Shes really cute and she just has this aura of interest about her. I would love to pluck up the guts and walk over and ask for her number. But i am almost certain the reply will be me getting kicked out of Mc donalds and freaking out the girl... It just seems that everyone in this country is self centered and and to wrapped up in there self to let something happen that would break the painfully Dull norm of there life. Work, Sleep, Drink.... This is all i see in this country and me not being a drinker i find a social life is impossible. So has anyone ever experienced this? I dont mean to generalise but until experiences change this is what i can assume.

Please help me out... Is this just me? or what?

My ex was from Ireland and I live in London - what you're experiencing is the typical small town mentality that I have seen flourishing all over the UK, and undoubetly across most of the world.

I moved to London because of the possibilities, the opportunites to meet people and because I thought people were here to better themselves and not be stuck in a rut. Truth is, London's a lonely place, and at least the Irish are friendly and don't look at you as though you're mad if you try to start a conversation.

Im sorry but i experience the complete opposite... If you try and start a conversation your a freak. even you you look at someone they can freak out

Maybe it's different in Cork, but in general I've always found Dublin and Belfast to be much friendlier than London

I'm Irish but I don't exactly know what you mean. How would the response result in you being kicked out of McDonalds? If she's attractive I'm sure she gets chatted up all the time, inside or outside of work by worse than you.

Now I'm not from Cork and I've only been down there once, I agree that many of the Corkians are a weird breed but I don't think that's a problem. Is it in the city or a rural setting? Keep away from the small town life as it will break your heart, head and leave you wrecked.

But romance is a hard game over here, some people are just to thick to understand it if you ask me.

No Because to be honest i dont want to be like them and its not so much wierd as distanced from reality and unaware of whats going on around them especially when something happens out of the blue

If your interested in her then you should just talk to her whenever you get a chance and get to know her, that's how most relationships start.

Or else you can just muster up a ton of courage and bravado and ask her for her number.

You'll sometimes have to take risks, and not worry about it. If you're random as it is, it won't be very surprising to her. Its about about perception.

I've never been to Ireland (sadly!) but I doubt what your'e describing is specific to that country. I think people are just not inclined to the unpredictable, uncertain and risky side of things. Unfortunately, you may have to be proactive in finding friends that share your interests (ie, don't expect them to just pop up out of nowhere).

The thing is red I wouldnt get the chance to talk to her. i only ever see her working... I doubt my social group or hers would interact... So its bravado or nothing!

but you don't even know her- so how do you know that you have different interests?

start with basic interests....

"you like breathing? WOW!! me tooo!"

"i see you like to wear clothes...... me too"

@Runner: Irish people aren't cold! (Just damp & soggy from all the rain.)

@Artisan: Well The People's Republic of Cork is rather unlike anywhere else in Ireland :p and I don't know it all that well, though I do get the impression that it's quite small and maybe a bit insular.

I really think as long as you're not too cocky/smarmy/crude/pushy/etc. that girl won't freak out & have you barred! Whereas if you never ask her... :o

Anywho, TBH i don't think your experiences will change without effort on your part (perhaps favouring a bit of optimism rather than the presumption that "everyone in this country is self centered and and to wrapped up in there self to let something happen that would break the painfully Dull norm of there life." :bunny:

But don't worry, as unlikely as it appears, not everyone in Ireland loves drinking themselves silly, and I really think if ya got to meet more people your social life would take off. Seriously, I've two friends who have had the most ridiculously good social life since being convinced to join Young Fine Gael (a political 'party' haha) ...and neither of them have even registered to vote! :D

1. Ask that girl

2. Join...things

3. Expect the best!

4. Last resort? Move to Dublin lol! The pale's where it's at :p

I don't see how your lack of courage in asking her out is an indictment of the Irish!

Take the risk! What's the worst that could happen? Is she not worth the risk of a moment's embarrasment?

I totally understand you not wanting to meet girls in drinking joints.

If you really can't summon up the courage, why not meet girls online? That way, before you even meet, you can sound them out to see whether they have a narrow small town mentality or whether, like you, they have broader visions.
