i thought id post this poem because it suits the theme of this forum....

im studying william blake for lit exams and it was amusing. basically blake suggests that you need to be either the clod of clay or pebble in relationship to make it work.

I ASK YOU..... are you the clod of clay or pebble? or maybe are your a bit of both say a clay centre with pebble shell... like me?

 the clod and the pebble

"love seeketh not itself to please,

nor for itself hath any care,

but for another gives it ease,

and builds a heaven in hells despair."

so sang a little clod of clay,

trodden with the cattles feet,

but a pebble of the brook

warbled out these metres meet:

"love skeeth only self to please,

to bind another to its delight,

joys in another's loss of ease,

and builds a hell in heavens despite."

I think you are right Twiggy.....most of us are a little of both. I've ran into quite a few predominately "Pebbles" though....and have been quite the pebble myself.

I really liked the poem....it makes a big statement about who we are as humans.

yeah i thought that too. it was written in 1700's i would advise people to read "songs of innocence and experiance" by william blake. it helps answer questions. its helped me veiw upon my romances too and i notice i also take the pebbles role.

The poem is something to consider. It seems to me that love tends to bring the worst out in people. It's a good idea to make sure you're happy independent of your love life or you'll easily become that pebble.

Frodo.. that's so true... I live in NYC and was very unhappy/confused after Sept. 11. A few months after Sept. 11, I started dating someone. I was still very unhappy when we started dating, but became very happy in the relationship. Once the relationship ended, I had to face the all the emotions that the relationship covered up. Tough stuff...

I wonder if true love makes us happy because "for once" we are caring more about someone else's feelings than our own.
