Sleeping Disorder since HS now in college...sigh

i cant fall asleep during nites when i really actually am tired/sleepy.

there are times where i cant sleep 2 days straight in row...when i do go to bed, ill just be lying there practically unable to fall asleep. when there are tims that i do fall asleep...it'll either be a few hrs before i actually have to get up OR waking up several times during hte night and refalling back to sleep....i have dreams almost every time i fall asleep cause i dont ever get enouhg of it!!

 

ive given up sleeping in the afternoon cause i thought that was the main problem...it worked for a few days...but i still cant fall asleep at night about 3 or 4x a week

 

you guys wont believe me....but i've had this sleeping disorder as far as i can remember...around the beginning of HS or was it during the middle of junior high....

I'm a sophmore on college now and my sleeping disorder still exists...when i tell ppl i cant fall asleep they think i have problems...i might tho..

 

half of the time i think...so that explains why ic ant sleep...then the other half when i dont think i still just roll around in bed...

This is also affecting my daily life....my eyes hurt during the day cause i stress them to keep myself focused...altho i never find myself being a victim of snoozing during the day anywhere....im not as sharp or think as quick as i used to be...and maybe preventing me from gaining weight?? im 19 and still weigh 115lbs...its been like this for a couple years...

 

can anyone give me some advice OTHER than taking sleeping pills or seeing a shrink...??

an yes everyone else in my family can sleep so easily while i have to suffer from lack of sleep almost daily!!

don't know about where you live but in the UK we have sleep clinics. If you regularly skip sleep for two days you would benefit from being assessed at a place like this.

some suggestions:

 

1 - seeing a sleep specialist (sleeping disorders are more complex than you may think)

2 - healthen up your life-style (exercise, eat well, work hard, rest enough, etc)

3 - how do you sleep? is it too hot or cold or stuffy? wearing socks helps many ppl. drinking a glass of lukewarm milk sometimes helps. have you tried reading right before you sleep? or taking a bath/shower? listening to some soothing music? do you have a pre-sleep ritual (i like to clean up my space, take a shower, have a drink, assess my day and plan the next one, put lotion/cream all over, etc - whenever i have time for all that, my sleep's grrreat).

 

Btw, I think it's never a good idea to stay in bed if you haven't fallen asleep after 15-20 mins of being there. If sleep won't come, do something else until you feel sleepy.

i switched from taking showers before i go to bed to taking them in the morning a few weeks ago...it's half and half, nothing really changed about my slleep.

i exercise average once each 2 days, i eat 4 meals per day, work hard?? haha thats funny, truth is im a slacker i wait till the last minute to do anything, resting...yes hopefully.

where i sleep is fine the temp is warm, nope i dont read b4 i sleep, in fact im not much of a reader...only an artist! music i listen to several times a day...

 

yep i hear that often about not staying in bed after 20 mins of not falling asleep....altho i dont really know what'd i do to feel sleepy...but ill try that whenever icant sleep

You know the strange thing is....Me compared to my friend...she gets average 7 - 8 hours which is normal per night. and i catch her being a victim of snoozing off in the day....and me with my sleeping disorder....most of the time i dont feel physically tired at all...and my eyes arent droopy or sleepy like she is....i dont know maybe i was born with the ability of sleeping less than most ppl and still do as much during the day as anyone else!!

and i have another friend who can pass out while watching tv or playing comp @ home...damnit!!

she believes in the sleep GOD...maybe i should do that also...haha

what no way!! i'm not as sharp or quick minded...(just a little bit) almost everyday cause of my sleeping disorder

 

hey !! dont forget sleeping disorder is still bad for your health and bodily functions in the long run!

not feeling sharp enough during the day is an issue.

 

just plain sleeping less than others is fine though - some people naturally need less sleep (and some naturally need more!).

 

check with your family doc ... it's been going on for too long for you to get in under control on your own.

haha you know i went for a body check up a few weeks ago, told the doc most of the time i can't fall asleep at night...u know what he said? this was at a clinic

 

"you're a young adult, young people have no trouble sleeping..." pfft yea right

 

i dont think he knows jack squat, maybe i should seek help elsewhere

I have had trouble sleeping off and on during different periods of my life and I know that my problem is obsessively thinking about something over and over in my head. It might be over a presentation I have to give or a confrontation that I will have to face with another person, etc. I go over different scenarios again and again in my head even though I know it is pointless. I have to make an effort to clear my mind, almost like meditation or something. The best sleep I ever got was during boot camp when I was exausted every night and knew I only had 4 or 5 hours to make the best of it. I was too tired to give a damn about anything. These days I might have one night a month where I have a lot of trouble sleeping and making an effort to clear my mind usually works really well.
