:bunny: I'm quitting smoking, starting today. :bunny:

 

I've done it before, I was a nonsmoker for years at one point. Unfortunately, I picked up the habit again.

 

I so want to walk away from this, for good. I actually hate that I do it at this point, which helps.

 

I'm on LS a lot tonight, keeps the hands busy. Lol

 

 

Any experiences, thoughts, hints to share?

That is great. I quit for a year but have been smoking again for a couple years. When I quit I sucked on suckers and chewed gum a lot. The suckers helped keep my hands busy. good luck and let me know if you find any good hints. I would like to stop again. I started again from going out with friends drinking. When I would drink I would want to smoke.

Good for you.. don't give up..

 

I quit cold turkey in 1993... never trusted myself for even one puff...

 

My life completely changed.. for the better.. I look healthier.. feel much better.. my hair shines, my skin glows.. it's unbelievable the changes it makes.. (it's all good)...

 

Just think about all the benefits it will bring you... :bunny:

Here`s another helpful hint I learned from a friend- keep a bag of carrot sticks (thinly sliced but not quite julienned) in the car when you`re driving anywhere.

 

It will give you something to do with your smoking hand, as well as placating the oral fixation.

I bought the patch today. Good grief they are almost as much per day as a pack of smokes. The directions say that you should not smoke at all if you are using them. I was told by the md today that I have to quit.I'm outside smoking as I type this. 25 years, actually 30 on and off. This is not gonna be easy.I've only had 4 today which is down from 2+ packs a day. Good luck,I'm interested to hear how you are doing with it.

I have done it before and succeeded for a couple of years..and my stupid ass got right back to it...was out with friends on a drunken night decided to smoke one and that was the end of me once again...now I have been on it nonstop...but I don't want to stop... at least not for now...

Good luck deux ex machina and Ifwisheswerehorses. I've smoked for about 10 years (sad cause I'm only 24) and I've tried to quit many many many many times. I've had some success with patches, gum, suckers, and sunflower seeds but what always does me in is either drinking, or losing a friend/girlfriend. Over the past year or so I've been able to cut it down to only when I'm drinking (mainly) which is about 2 nights a week but I'm taking this entire month off from drinking so I'm hoping that a month away from cigs will finally be it. *crosses fingers*

 

Another reason why people find it hard to quit is because of the routines you get in. You know, eat a meal, have a square. Hop in the car, have a square. Have sex, have a square...You just got to keep those routines but that's when those suckers or seeds come in to play instead of the cig. Also, don't forget to take "smoke breaks" at work or where ever you typically have them. It's important to step away from the desk for 5-10 like you always have, just no smoking. Make a phone call, read a book, go for a walk.

 

I'm sure if you've been smoking for a while you'll know this but just incase you didn't.

I'm following most of your hints.

 

Last night, I had a dream I was smoking. It was very vivid, for some reason I was smoking these unfiltered cigarettes, I looked amazing and felt incredibly relaxed in the dream...

 

I know this was the addictive mind romanticizing smoking. Damn. Did one good job. Lol.

 

Today is the second day! Sliding into the third by the end of the day.

 

The first three days are crucial, for physiological reasons.

The next stepping stone is a week.

After that, two weeks.

 

I've been drinking some cranberry juice, for reasons you can Google. Going to the website whyquit.com helps.

 

One big thing that is bothering me is I am having a VERY difficult time concentrating. I keep making obvious mistakes, even when typing this - I even skipped whole words and had to go back.

 

I can't use nicotine to instantly call up sugar anymore...and it'll take a few days for my body to really understand it is not getting nicotine, and start doing what it should have done naturally in the first place.

 

Not to mention, I'm going through a lot of stress, a broken relationship that will take a while to play out entirely, career changes, ect...mega-stress that will not be letting up anytime soon (meaning, at least a year).

 

I'm a little cranky. Definitely not myself, at all. Sleepy a lot.

Mostly calm though, thankfully I have a sense of humor. :laugh:

Sounds like you're doing great. I'm not there yet. I've cut down drastically but I'm going to give it a start for good (I hope) Tuesday. Thanks for the tips as well as the website. Keep up the good work!!

I am so impressed with what you are undertaking. You aren't throwing up your hands and giving up, saying, "Oh I smoked X amount for X long, so forget it."

 

Instead you are taking charge of it. Congrats to you. :bunny::)

 

That website is very good. I kept waiting for the upsell, there really isn't any. He has lots of free videos you can watch there, btw - they are arranged to give you support and information, day-to-day on your quit.

I guess this starts day FIVE, smoke-free.

 

Maybe because it is Saturday, maybe it's because of a lot of things - but god, I feel like I'm crawling on the ceiling today of all days.

 

Nice little crying jag earlier, too.

 

They did say "every quit is different".

 

I want to pull my hair out and yet also want to sleep at the same time. Also, nice insomnia kick last night.

 

I think? It's my body's way of getting my off-center even to want it?

 

Not sure. :(

 

Knowing there's many here rooting for me helps.

 

I bought carrots, and candies. Haven't had the carrots yet, shall get some the right size the evening, hopefully.

 

What else? Oh, I do love some of the benefits I am getting already.

 

I smell nice. Like vanilla. That makes me happy. :love:

Anyone who reads this, I want to point out that it is very important to write down the reasons you don't want to smoke anymore before you quit if at all possible.

 

I didn't. I knew I should've, yet I didn't take the time, I thought I'd remember.

 

Well, guess what? The mind is a trickster, and there is so very much you can and will forget...anything to make it a temptation to have just one...just one, to relax?...it's harmless...just one...

 

Yeah. So.

 

Write it down on a sheet of paper, take the paper with you.

It's worth the time. Trust me on that.

 

 

I never smoked much in public, at all.

I'm really pleased about not being paranoid that someone can smell it on me anymore.

 

 

Food tastes way better, too. :)

Hey dude, You have done good thing earlier as you left this bad habit of Smoking. You know that smoking is injurious to health. It disturbs whole mechanism of body,metabolic activities and decrease the immune system power. Leave this habit again as it can take your life without taking permissions. Be aware , try to avoid it and live happy and healthy life.

The reminder of how damaging it can truly be is helpful - this isn't child's play, that's for sure.

 

Well timed, I might add. I find myself thinking of the whole "just one won't hurt" thing again today...grrr...:mad:

 

And what I found is a great approach in banishing that little demon is just what you posted to me - the Stick. One of the reason I wished I would've have written those reasons down. Meh. ;):laugh:

 

The Carrot is when I think of the benefits of being a non-smoker.

The Stick is when I think of the hazards of smoking.

Hi

There is no reason to go out any more since Ohio has become smoke free. But than again, it is ironic that bars are closing up because bars are getting no business because Ohio is now smoke free. Thanks a lot non-smokers who don't even give their business to these places and because of you non-smokers, people are out of work and can't provide for their families.

Ohio isn't/won't allow ultra-light cigarettes anymore, either. I think that's a rumor, though.

 

Well, Ohio does have a few things going for it. Kent State, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, and lots serial killers and inventors come to mind.

I just lit up for the second time tonight. There is nothing like the smell of a freshly lit cigarette. And the peaceful sizzling sound when you take a long draw in a quiet room, while watching the smoke curl lazily toward the ceiling before it dissipates.

You have gotten some good tips from the other posters, something I would add would be to carry around straws with you. You can hold it between your fingers and it will also help with the oral fixation. Also lolipops are good and chewing gum. Don't buy quitting gum or patches or anything..do it cold turkey.

I went through I don't know how much candy. :laugh:

 

Should've used straws...that's a great idea.

 

I tried carrot sticks, but it just didn't work well for me.

 

Don't buy quitting gum or patches or anything..do it cold turkey.

 

I was tempted to try nicotine replacement methods, but was told to just white-knuckle it.

I quit a year ago with the patches after having been a full time smoker for 10 years. I also know that Wellbutrin/Zoloft works too.

 

How are you holding up and have you tried any new methods?
