I have been seeing my boyfriend for a year and a half. We live together and have done so for the last year or so. We are compatable but his chararistics and values are different than mine. For the most part we get a long great. There are times that he is very inconsiderate and unthoughtful and his temper is terrible. My family and friends don't see the kind and gentle side that I continue to stay with him for. Am I holding on to something that isn't there? Should he be the same person behind closed doors that he is when my family/friends see? Is this something that I should take my blinders off and take into consideration? I hate to give up because I am always hoping for the person I dream and hope for to eventually show himself to me. Do people change?

Dear Margo,

I know what you are going through, cause I've been there before. Though I dated my ex-boyfriend for 4 years, but did not live with him. We did have plans of getting married, but it was never really discussed because it wasn't his best topic. If your significant other has not changed, when you've told him about his temper or mood swings, they never will change! I had that discussion with my ex, and he always said he'd change, but he didn't. I finally got tired of it, and started to have a grudge against him. I finally broke up with him, and he has begged me to go back with him. Knowing the fact that he said he'd change, I didn't believe a word he said. They have enough time to realize what they are losing. If your parents think he is not for you, or he acts moody in front of them, then listen to your parents. Your mom is always right. My mom saw it all the time with me, and the rest of my family also. But I had to find out for myself. Don't think you're never going to find someone else, you will. There's someone for everybody. I've been broken up with my ex since May, and I'm seeing a wonderful person that I've clicked with perfectly. Don't make the mistake, fix it before it's too late! Good Luck!
