Lauriebell82
My jaw has began to hurt recently, like within the last month or so. It mostly hurts when I open my mouth or try to chew. It is especially bad after I get done working out. Could it be related to exercise and heavy breathing? I know none of you are doctors, but has anyone ever experienced this? I am puzzled... It could be TMJ. I have that and it does cause jaw pain. Do you notice a click? This is just a guess BTW. Mea:)
Trialbyfire
You've been a little stressed lately. Could it be from stress/tension or grinding your teeth at night?
Star Gazer
Yup. I get it REALLY bad on the right side when I'm super stressed or emotionally traumatized. It's TMJ. I don't grind my teeth, but I sorta clench my jaw muscles (not even with the teeth touching) when I'm stressed. I had it really bad when my dog died, my grammy passed, and when my last firm was shutting down. Take some Advil and try to do things that relieve stress (working out, yoga, etc.). D-Lish
Stress LB... Totally stress. You have a wedding coming up and are going full throttle on the weight loss regimen. It stands to reason that you are grinding your teeth in your dreams:p.
Art_Critic
hahahaha... Honeymooners ?? Seriously.. TMJ and grinding are the top culprits and then put a tooth abscess in the list..
Author Lauriebell82
Okay I feel stupid but what's TMJ? lol
Isolde
It's temporamandibular (jaw) joint syndrome. I actually think I might have a mild version of it--the right side of my jaw "clicks" when I open or close my mouth too abruptly, and I occasionally get pain near my ears. Els
I'm betting on TMJ as well; many things can exacerbate or cause it. Could be grinding your teeth at night, constantly eating hard food, etc... Oh, uhhh, if you've been giving BJs more often than usual, it can happen as well.
Taramere
Go and see your dentist. It might be your wisdom teeth coming through. If they get impacted, that's pretty sore on the jaw.
nobody's girl
You can buy a bite guard at any pharmacy. You mold it to your mouth and wear it at night while you sleep to prevent you from grinding your teeth/clenching your jaw. They're not too expensive and if it doesn't work, you're not out too much money.
laRubiaBonita
in echo to the other posts..... it is probably stress and i bet you are clenching your jaw. i do this through out the day and i have to wear a night guard at night. my night guard REALLY HELPS!!!!! i got it through my dentist, it is small as compared to the OTC pharmacy guards you can purchase. of course it was super expensive- but my insurance cover it. Plus, i was doing more damage (in $$ to correct it) from clenching my teeth than the guard cost.... so far it has been a great investment! i have TMJ too though, but that really only acts up when i chew gum (which i haven't done in over 10 yeras!) or sleep with out my night guard. during the day i try and be conscience of my jaw clenching..... i tend to bite my tongue- literally instead(not hard though). Author Lauriebell82
Thanks everyone! I haven't given any BJ's lately (LOL) so that is definately not a contributing factor!!! My jaw does click when I open my mouth wide so I'm guessing that I do have TMJ. I have been under stress with trying to find another job as well. I lost my health insurance when I lost my job so I can't go to the dentist unfortunately. Does anyone have an idea why it hurts more after working out? I run a lot so maybe breathing heavy or my jaw moving up and down makes it worse?

Island Girl
I have TMJ - severe - not from grinding my teeth but clenching my jaw. When I am stressed I literally find myself having to make myself unclench it as well and those days I get headaches, my jaw aches, and chewing is very painful. Repetitive chewing like salads or chips exacerbate it as well. LB you say it is particularly painful after you work out. Are you clenching your teeth when you are working out? That can really take a toll and so very quickly.
sb129
LB- sounds like everyone else is right- you are either clenching or posturing your jaw in such a way that its contracting all the muscles around it and thats where the pain is coming from. I can't rule out wisdom teeth or dental problems but I know from both professional and personal experience that this is REALLY common when you are under stress. I had it so bad in my last destructive R I got terrible headaches, and I chewed through two mouthguards that I had made myself, and then by the third one I was holding my jaw in a really strange way rather than clenching. (It disappeared when I dumped the ex!) If you are having problems opening, you need to stretch those muscles out again, gently there is a way where you take a pile of wooden icecream sticks and see how many you can get in your mouth comfortably, hold for 1min X3 and then the next day add another stick and another the next etc etc. Try doing a few jaw stretching exercises when you do your exercise cool down as well (google them) and you can apply heat too. Take care with your diet- avoid really hard or chewy things for now. I'm not surprised, you have had alot on your plate lately. Take some time out to just relax and not think about stuff.. Island Girl
That will be $50 thanks peeps. I'll send hubbybear to deliver! He's closer. And maybe you can give him a bit of dental advice while he's there! No but really - the last few years have been hell with my TMJ. And mouth guards don't work because I'm a clencher and just bite right through them. So I'll try the Popsicle sticks and some other exercises I found. I try not to eat things (or have only small portions) that cause me to have to repetitively chew - some are no problem (salads!) but others like chips and jerky are really tough to forget about.
