CorvetteKitten
my boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years in December.. we are both committed to each other, have talked about spending our lives together, and see eye to eye on where we want to be in life before we tie the knot. Not to mention, its hard to save for a ring when I just lost my job. Anywho.. so Nevada just passed the law allowing for domestic partnerships.. effective as of today! Just so happens that he had a 'health insurance' meeting at work yesterday, which brought up the fact I just lost mine when I lost my job (and I need health insurance). When he came home, he suggested very casually about registering as domestic partners so I could be on his insurance. His employer has already confirmed they honor domestic partners as "spouses". Without skipping a beat, I said ok and we started the process. So as of now, not 24 hours after the suggestion, we are legally bound as domestic partners. When I told a couple friends and family about the decision, they gave me mixed feelings. Most of them complained that I should have just eloped to make it "real." Some even gave me grief that it was for "gays" only (which I do NOT believe) This leads me to wonder, what is the difference to everyone? Both are saying that legally, on paper we are committed to each other in a loving relationship. I still want the mushy proposal, the ring, and the dress. I just don't want it RIGHT NOW. Why rush things when they are good, right? So I want some opinions.. what is the difference between a marriage and a domestic partnership?
