JamesM
I ask that because we hear so often of breast cancer and how many women get it. Yet online, it says that 4 out of 5 lumps that are discovered by mammograms are non-cancerous. So, how many here have had the non-cancerous ones discovered and what did they end up being diagnosed as?
hotgurl
I was just going to post how my aunt had cysts and they were non cancerous than I just remembered one eventually was cancerous.
Lizzie60
did you notice a lump? My BFF had those before.. and they were only cysts.. (no cancer)...
bentnotbroken
I have had a couple biopsied, they were just cyst. But I insist that anytime I find one it is checked out thoroughly. The first time was in my 20's and without a history of breast cancer, I had to fight my dr(who is no longer my dr.)my insurance and tech doing the mammogram. It's my life, I don't mind fighting for it now.
Author JamesM
did you notice a lump? My BFF had those before.. and they were only cysts.. (no cancer)... My wife had something show up on a scan. So I am curious. Seems to me everyone I have heard about had it turn about to be cancerous, but my guess is that anyone that has not had cancerous doesn't talk about it. And maybe others will read this thread and be reassured or not. While everyone is different, I find that I am really quit ordinary and not unusual. The majority statistics usually apply. I remember about ten years ago that I had a lump checked out. The doctor was certain it was cancerous. When I went for a biopsy, the doctor told me that most tests that he did were not cancerous. He said that "you only hear about cancerous ones." And in my case, he was right. Mine was not cancer. With breast cancer, it seems that "most" are cancerous. With such a wide range of individuals here, I was curious what everyone's experiences were.
IfWishesWereHorses
My daughter's GYN found a lump when she was 17. They did a sonogram and removed it. It was a benign tumor. I can't remember what they called it exactly. The two weeks between finding it and the removal and biopsy where nerve racking for us. She kept referring to the surgeon as Dr. Coppafeel while coming out of anesthesia... I wanted to kill her then, even though I was so relieved that it was benign! During the few weeks of wait time I talked to MANY woman who had gone through the same thing and had cysts or tumors that were benign. I think it is quite common. baker23
When I was in my 20's, I discovered a couple of lumps in my breast. I went to get an ultrasound, and it turns out they were benign fat lumps. The doctor said this was quite normal for big breasted women; I thought that made sense since breasts are mostly fat. He also said that caffeine had something to do with getting breast lumps.
TaraMaiden
I once had lump, but it was due to a hormonal imbalance, too much oestrogen. Hormone therapy put the problem straight.
quankanne
of all the women I know, only two were actually diagnosed with breast cancer after finding lumps – most of what I've heard were benign cysts, dense breast tissue and cysts from too much caffeine intake. much better to be overly zealous at reporting odd lumps and having it be nothing, than to ignore it only to later find out it's something extremely serious. jennifer4
did she feel a lump? Or was it just seen on a mammogram? I am 37. I had my 2nd mammogram in March. They found "something". I was sent back for a more extensive mammogram and an u/s. It was just fibrous tissue. I never felt anything but seeing it on the mammogram they had to check further. Good luck! Author JamesM
Thanks for the responses. It all turned out good. What happened is that she had a scan of her abdomen. This included her breasts. There was a suspicious lump that showed up, and they couldn't let that go. So she and I had some tense days...even though deep inside I figured that it would not be cancerous. And it wasn't. The mammogram revealed that it was simply a lymph gland. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why the other scan did not distinguish the difference, but it didn't Jennifer, she could never find the lump. And in her case, she does have fibrous tissue in her breasts. Thankfully, all is well. A part of me feels a bit guilty that we CAN be while many other women find out so differently. In fact, a couple of days before we found out, a lady we knew died from cancer. So it goes.
jennifer4
I'm glad everything is ok! I totally understand about the last week+ being stressfull. I had to wait 2 weeks. When I went in for the u/s and mammogram there were about 15 other women who had all been called back. How awkard sitting there chatting with all of them know that a few of them were going to get the news of cancer that day. My mom was diagnosed last Sept. at the age of 56 with breast cancer, she went thru chemo and is doing great now! So thankfull! Again I'm glad everything is ok with your wife. Meaplus3
Thanks for the responses. It all turned out good. Glad to hear it all turned out good James. I had the same thing happen to me on my very first mammo. They saw something and called me back. It was just a lymph gland. I also had a tiny cyst that turned out to be nothing. So glad your wife is ok. Mea:)
