You may want to invest in some type of 'book of synonyms', and just pick a few words at a time to study and master. At amazon.com, "The Synonym Finder" has plenty of good customer reviews.

It can be a fun pastime - and educational, too :bunny:

Just sit down with a dictionary and read. When I was bored in high school, I would read dictionaries.. Others may have gotten to date and whatever, but I have a large vocabulary as a result.. Also read more, you'll pick up more words. Also maybe learn some latin. You'll learn the origins of many of the words we use, as well as it will help you with vobulary in other languages like French and Spanish.

The best way to improve your vocabulary is to read novels.

I agree with crosswordfiend.

Expanding your vocabulary permanently will definitely occur with more vigorous reading. When you encounter a word you don't know, look it up in the dictionary.

However, I do know some people who are avid readers who have a piss-poor vocabulary, at least concerning conversational vocabulary. I think the best thing to do, in that case, is to be aware of what you're saying and how you're saying it when you speak--in other words, think before you speak. It's easy to get emotionally charged in conversation and let your thoughts just come out with whatever words your speech is naturally inclined to use, but if you want to be precise and well-spoken, you need to take your time speaking and think about what you want to express and how you want to express it.

Investing in a thesaurus and dictionary is good advice too. :)
