strongertoday Posted November 18, 2009 Share Posted November 18, 2009 Where to start.... my hubby of only a few months needs to get drunk. he can usually go for 3 weeks between getting drunk, but when he gets drunk it cant be a dozen beers, it has to be 24 and a bottle of bourbon and a 14-16 hour event that ends in him being verbally abusive. If I lock myself away then it ends there. If I confront him and ask him to stop then it has gotten physical. In between times he can have a drink or two with a meal or after dinner and he wont want more. He says its his way of dealing with stress and he needs to let of steam. He thinks I am unreasonable wanting to limit the amount he drinks to say 12 beers (he is certainly drunk by then but not abusive). He has a bucket of past hurts...dad that was never there...ex that aborted his child...etc etc I dont know if he is an alcoholic ..... or just used to dealing this way.... or just so full of hurt he doesnt know what to do.... Im probably in denile...lol... definately suffering lack of sleep.... Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks !! Link to post Share on other sites

If you let it, Express your concern to him, let him know that you are worried and that you dont want him to end up an alcoholic, be subtle at first.. he will most likely take offense...Im sorry to hear what you are going though. The reasons may vary, but there are common emotions that self-medicators feel, such as repressed anger, self-loathing, denial, obstinance, etc. You are with an alcoholic whether he ever admits it or not. Those who get drunk occasionally at a wedding, or when they hear horrible news that somebody has died, or too much at a social gathering, are not necessarily alcoholics, but those who use alcohol as a drug as if they are their own psychiatrist, are alcoholics.
