mysterious bruising

Recommended Posts

About a week ago I was standing in the kitchen when I felt a sudden, sharp burning pain on the back of my thigh - I hadn't just bumped into anything and I can't think of anything I had done to injure myself that day.

I was wearing mesh shorts, so I turned to look at the back of my leg - there was a raised red welt, about an inch long that hurt when touched. The burning sensation lasted maybe 10 minutes.

It still was a red welt when I went to bed; the next morning when I woke up and checked, it was a large-ish bruise. The center (the part that was red and raised the night before) was yellow, with purple and blue rings outside of it; the bruise was about twice as big as the welt had been.

Now, a week later, the center of the bruise is purple and red surrounded by blue, and it's twice as large as the bruise was a week ago.

I'm slightly concerned, as I've never had a bruise like this before, and it's gotten worse rather than better. Possibly because of its location (so I sit on it basically). I can't really find any information online about this type of bruising.

Probably I'll call my doctor tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm concerned and looking for info on bruises, blot clots, etc. Help?

Briefly spoke to doctor on phone, but haven't been able to get in to see her with the holidays....but she said it sounds like a contusion (huge lump in the middle of the bruise), and I popped a blood vessel.

Just FYI in case anyone was interested :p

I'm still concerned though, because I didn't DO anything to it that I can think of...I was just standing in the kitchen, not leaning on anything....

so the doc. is going to see you though?

there could have been internal stress on the blood vessle that caused it to rupture- things you did not even notice.

for now get some witch hazel and swab that on the area a few times a day and gently massgae the bruised area- that will help the blood move and should get rid of the discoloration sooner.

Yup, next week :) She doesn't seem too concerned, so I guess it's not a blood clot or an autoimmune disease or anything :p

Thanks for the advice, I didn't know witch hazel could be used on bruises!

Contusion is just a fancy word for bruise. This is why I hate doctors, sometimes. Rather than say, "I don't know," they pull out big words and the patient says, "Oh. Okay."

:p I was happy she called it something normal (contusion) and seemed to brush it off...I was worried that when I told her how it felt when I got it she'd say "Oh yup, that's a blood clot, better go to the ER" or something.

I've never had that type of bruise without an obvious injury before - just felt a pop and burning on my leg and there it was.
