Cell phones and availibility as a parent.

Devil Inside

So last night my W and I got into a heated discussion. I was at a friend's house and she called my cell, and because we were listening to some loud music I did not hear it. Well I picked up her call like an hour or so later and noticed she called like four times.

I called back and asked if she was ok. She said she was worried because it was late and I always pick up my phone so she was worried. I told her I had it and was sorry I didn't hear it. She said that as a parent I need to always be available and have my phone with me.

So this lead to this whole discussion about whether a parent HAS to have their cell phone on and ready 24 hours a day. I told her that I have it, but that if an emergency happened she as the children's mother was there to handle it. She said that I should always be ready in case of emergency and what if she needed me.

I am just wondering how other parent's feel about this topic. Are you always on call? Even if the other parent is home with the children? I mean what in the world did people do before cell phones.

Before cell phones people left detailed contact information on where they could be reached: I will be at X house/restaurant/neighbor/friend/gym/etc. at this address and this phone number. I should be there at X time, and I should be leaving at Y time, and I'll be unavailable for 20 minutes after that while I'm in the car driving back home.

As a parent you need to be reachable in an emergency.

DI, you know this has nothing to do with parenting, don't you. It's about trust and your affair.

This thought did cross my mind..and i guess it makes sense. I have caused quite mess.

This was my first thought. I have small children and there are those rare moments in which I cut my cell completely off in order not to be bothered. Of course only when they are with my H. There were only two times in my M in which I DEMANDED my H to be "on call" and that was near my due dates for giving birth!

What was the reason she needed to get hold of you? Was it an emergency? I don;t understand otherwise why you would have to be on 'call'. It seems like an issue between you & her and nothing to do with the kids....I don't know your history but it would seem to me she still has feelings for you
