Should I stay at my job?

been here 10 years now. same salary for 2 years. Been here since i was 20. I do shipping and back up on the phones and purchasing and invoicing, basically a little bit of everything at this small family owned business. The industry doesn't interest me much, but it's a solid job. However, I could use a raise, rent is expensive, i have bills, Wife at home, future to think about, etc.

A lot of the time, i've just kinda skated by here, while I pursued graphic design and the arts outside of work. Nothing has panned out with my art, but i do alright. I had dreams of finding a job in the arts, but i'm not schooled nor have I ever found anything promising.

But here at work, there's the possibability that i ''could'' maybe venture

into outside sales for the company, but there's no promise of a change in pay and no commision incentives and I'd have to use my own car (when past sales guys have had cars provided for them) and I'm torn between REALLY trying to impress the boss and going for it and really drumming up business OR just finding a whole new job that pays

more in a field that i actually enjoy...

I feel stuck because i'm lucky to have a job in these times...but I need to

do something soon because I need to make more money to help out at

home with my wife and our future.

While i would normally advise people to stay in a job for no other reason than because the economy sucks, i would definitely start looking else where. I was also in a company for 10 years (before i got laid off) and looking back, i think i should have looked else where after 5 or 6 years there tops...but i got comfortable (plus i love that job). Sometimes that's the easiest way to move up on the pay ladder.

I see plenty of graphic design jobs still (UK)...i'd applied to some myself, even though i had zero experience, other than i dabbled as a hobby. Tip: start gathering some sort of portfolio and a pdf file of your art works to send with your resume! To my surprise, even though i was turned down, i was chuffed i got an interview for it.

Risks and chances. Sometimes we just need to go for it, even though it scares us. Whatever you decide - good luck.
