Glenguy
Maybe I should be asking my doctor about this, but maybe someone here can give me advice. Last January I had an umbilical hernia (in the belly button) taken out. What I would like to know is that if I do situps, crunches, or any other stomach tightening excercises, will it weaken the tissue and cause another hernia? Thanks.
SoulSearch_CO
I don't see how strengthening the muscles can weaken them. That's a bit of a contradiction. But that aside - if you're worried about the area they cut into (do they have to cut through the muscle to fix an umbilical hernia?) being "weak," that's not going to be the case. When they cut into muscle, the scar tissue actually builds up and makes that spot STRONGER than before. I've read of such being the case when doing a repeat C-section on women - it's harder getting that cut into the uterus again because of scar tissue. But yes - because I don't know exactly what's involved with a hernia repair, it would be a good idea to talk to your surgeon. He/she would know the quirks involved regarding exercise following such a surgery. I had laparoscopic surgery 2 years ago with 4 different entry points and I have no problem whatsoever with ab exercises.
