Well its a controversial religion that lots of people find hard to believe in. Especially gays and bisexuals, because it literally calls them an abomination. :/ But to me, gays and bisexuals are humans. We live in a world of gray where everyone sins. So Christians shouldn't point the finger at anyone. As long as you live life and not sit around being miserable, I'm perfectly find with you not believing in God. As a Christian, I hope he touches your heart and changes your mind. But as a human - eh, its all you.
D-Lish
I've never believed in anything like that myself. I think I discarded the notion of a god before Santa or the Easter Bunny when I was a little kid. My mother made me go to church until I was 12. None of it ever seemed rational to me. I actually got kicked out of Sunday school because I asked too many questions. Even at a young age, the hypocrisy was an issue for me. However, I do find culture and religion fascinating as a field of study. So much so that I majored in Comparative Religion in University.

D-Lish
You majored in Comparative Religion? What do you do for a living? Lol. Yes I did. I also have a minor degree in History and a social services diploma. Comparative religion is really just a different way of looking at the world through the myriad cultural practices and beliefs in the world. I loved it. As for what I do now? I am a District Manager. Lovelybird
I've heard that some people who are raised in a legalistic christian environment would grow up resisting the whole christian thing, that they developed a closed mind to christianity due to their own experiences. I think this makes sense. Often times I think I know lots of things about God. But again and again I got corrected, and found out how wrong I was. I used to think that God is watching me second by second, if I do something wrong, he is going to be mad at me, and bad thing is going to happen. then later I learned that I was living under law, not grace. Why I thought God that way? because my parents are kind of strict and perfectionist. I used to secretly think Jesus made a harsh requirement about "turn your right cheek also", I resented Jesus for saying that. I am raised with blurry boundaries, and that turn-right-cheek teaching seems like the old teaching when I was little, and caused me many problems. Then later I found out I completely forgot Bible also teaches "give with a joyful heart", no matter what you want to give, be it grace, be it love, be it forgiveness, we are giving with a joyful heart, not forced because of law. I forgot Bible also teaches "be honest and put away all falsehood". If one offers his right cheek with a resentment in heart or out of guilt conscience, he is not being honest. And being honest is a very important element in all relationships. How many couples and married ones can really be honest with each other? dishonest cause problems. And many people even cannot be honest with themselves. Anyway, I am amazed by how much one's belief influences and shapes one's real life. And in the end every one of us are going to be hold responsible for our own lives, how did we respond to certain things, how did we live the best of our lives, how did we try to find out the truth, how did we respond to truth..... Author against_all_odds
to be honest a while ago i tried praying when my nanna was dying and what good did it do??it didnt help at all!! if there is a god out there im very dissapointed because this world is a disgrace with murders ..people starving etc..yes he supposedly cant interfere with free will n stuff n its us who do these things but then again shouldnt he have known how we would turn out... i do believe that back in the old days somone just came up with the story of god to give us all a purpose for being here because we dont actually really know why where here and probably never will know
Moai
Everybody is an atheist to a certain extent. Christians, for example, don't believe in Allah, Thor, Apollo, Vishnu, or Ra. I just go one god further and don't believe in their's, either.

This incident alone is probably not enough to shut out God or religion for most people, but long term thinking and deduction are. I started thinking and questioning religion at an early age, when things just didn't add up. I too believe that somewhere down the human chain that some people decided to make these things up to establish a core belief to establish a moral compass. Perhaps a group of intellects foresaw the demise of human culture without some sort of unified belief system to keep us in check. There are many post on this topic on this forum, check them out. Love Hurts
Satan claims to be a Christian....[1 John 4:1] its why we are to test the spirits. By their fruits you will know them [Matthew 7:20]. I know many are repulsed by the addition of scripture ... yet I added it in defense of sound doctrine.
Simon Attwood
I do not believe in an interventionist god. And I believe we make our own suffering and if we expected a God to step in and stop us making each other suffer, then how are we to learn, as individuals, how to end our projections? Wow....I am soooooo sorry about your findings....that is horrible to abuse children...God I am so sorry:lmao: for real am crying right now because of your discovery....I can sit here and try to convince you of many things concerning God, although that is His job and not mine. MarcMann
I do not believe in an interventionist god. And I believe we make our own suffering and if we expected a God to step in and stop us making each other suffer, then how are we to learn, as individuals, how to end our projections? This is something that I believe to. But I think God did do something about human suffering. He sent us. People that care. If you want an example, then just look at this forum. It's filled with so many caring people helping each other out. So I do believe in God and I think his answer to murders, people starving, etc. Is us, the people of this world. We can help each other get through to the end or we can help ourselves. That's your choice. As for a purpose in life. I think you create your own. It's not written on a chalkboard in heaven saying, "Marc your purpose in life is to climb this mountain over here." Everyone is different. Some good and some bad. I think a good purpose in life is something that doesn't hurt you or hurt others. Now I'm not here to pass my beliefs on to anyone. This is just the way I view things. So it's okay if you disagree. I believe in God...but also a Goddess. I do believe that the deities have flaws just as humans do. I understand not believing, faith is a gift that some have and it's okay. Some believe we are seeded from aliens and the made up "God" to keep us busy. This could be possible but wouldn't it be freaky?! O.o
Eve
Harold Kushner's When Bad Things Happen to Good People is an amazing book to read on how to retain one's faith while coming to terms with such a complex issue. I thought he interviewed quite well on TV when he released his book a few years ago. Never bought the book but was told that it was good. H'mmm, maybe I will order it. Thanks for that reminder. Take care, Eve xx

wuggle
Yup, loads of priests are peds too. I recently found out that my form teacher (who was a priest) at high school was a peodophile , I was so gutted when I found out he had been abusing loads of kids in my class, but never even tried it on with me. That really doesn't do your ego any good

jenifer1972
I grew up in a very religious Christian family and have moved from there, to agnostacism, to episcopal, back to agnostic, and now am struggling with the idea that there may be no GOD/Goddess/whatever. There are so many amazing things about our universe and at the same time so many deeply troubling things about humans and this planet and the fact that if there is a God, s/he chooses not to intervene.... I for certain believe that God is either a "non interventionalist" like one poster said, or s/he's become apathetic about us, or is an underachiever. It is comforting to believe in God, I think that is what it is. Being an atheist is kind of like looking into a scary abyss that you know you are going to fall into (death) and truly believing there is no safety net.
