Aspirin doesn't usually work for migraines. You should call your doc; there is good medicine for migraines but I believe you have to get prescriptions for it, and you would need to see what you can take with your other medicine because sometimes drugs react against each other.

Patty - I agree that you probably want to see a Dr, especially if you experience migraine headaches with any frequency. There are a couple other non-medicinal things to try:

Many people find their hands get very cold (blood leaves your extremities and heads for your brain) - if you notice your hands are cold, concentrate on seeing the blood leaving your head and moving to your hands to warm them up - biofeedback - sounds funny but it works for many.

Try to figure out what is causing the headaches in order to avoid them. My mother's headaches are triggered by odors, she can't handle a freshly painted room or people spraying stinky pesticides, has to avoid places like Bath and Bodyworks. Others are bothered by loud or persistent noise. Bright light bothers many - wear sunglasses if it's sunny, don't work with glare on your computer screen.

Try to get enough sleep and avoid stress (easier said than done). Use caffeine in moderation. If you know you are sensitive to certain foods like chocolate or citrus, go easy on them (or cut them out if you can). Regular exercise - you know, all that stuff we're supposed to do to stay healthy but sometimes we don't do.

Migraines run in my family and I've seen a number of family members suffer for years - I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. Hope you feel better and experience them seldom. There are some great medications that they have come out with in the past few years, worth discussing with your doctor.

  • 1 month later...

I suffer from awful migranes...I suggest seeing a Dr, of course, but for the imediate relief...I have put a wooden spoon into a plastic cup fill it with water and freeze it. When the migrane comes take it and put a dish clothover it and place it on the base of your skull in the back (the very top of your spine....) that cools the blood and is the only thing that gives me relief...also cutting down on sugar and not eating any the day of a migrane helps me too ..good luck

Migraines run in my family too. My brother's are triggered by eyestrain. A number of mine have been caused by lack of sleep.

brashgal has some good suggestions there - I've also heard of folks who suffer from them that have benefited from biofeedback.

i had heard something about this stuff called Tiger Balm...you can find it in asian markets. Apparently you put it on your temples, shut the lights off in the room and shut the blinds and wait ten minutes, and put it right under your nostrils, and it goes away- the migraine does.

See your doc. There ARE prescription medicines for migraines. My mum uses them , and they help her.

My wife has debilitating migrains about every 3 months. She's been tested, probed, scanned, poked etc. She takes very strong meds when they hit, but they usually do little more than make her sick. I keep 3-4 cold packs in the freezer and alternate them when she gets a migrain. They affect people in different ways and, in her case, they typically peak over a 12-hour period.

Aside from the meds, she stays in bed and keeps the cold packs on her face. With her, they just have to run the course. With some, the meds work and they even have an injection now. When one feels a migrain coming on, they head to their Dr. and receive a shot. Honestly don't know how wise that is since my wife can barely move when she

gets them.

Net-net (I'm sure someone hates that term) see your doctor for a full evaluation. Have a CT Scan if you're doctor believes it's necessary.
