mood swings, low libido, sleep loads but always tired, no patience, no motivation to brush teeth wash, socialise with people who dont want to get stoned, no interest in normal family actvities, delayed response's when asked a question, every few weeks bad cold general immune system rubbish - stomach cramps diaoreah.

Everything but the last 2 are pretty well documented as going hand in hand with cannabis addiction.

I have a younger brother, 10 years my junior, who at 35 still lives at home with my parents and rarely ventures out and only has a part time job as a bicycle mechanic. He smokes skunk almost every day. Although i don't believe all of his problems are related to the drug use, having experienced the negative effects of living in that household myself, I am certain that the drug use contributes, especially to the lack of motivation to get himself out of that situation.

I've made this same observation.

While I do believe cannibis usage can be beneficial to some, (in small amounts) for medicinal purposes, I have witnessed the all the same

symptoms the OP mentioned, with people who indulge on a daily basis.

I've worked with people who were complete crab-a**es until they got

their daily fix. It also seemed like the older the people were, and the more ingrained the habit....the crabbier they were. (and difficult to work with...)

Based on my experience with that, I'm inclined to believe that it is a progressive addiction......it only gets worse.

I have smoked both for a few years, and got to the point where my ambitions were so bad,I couldn't even talk or say my name, always hungry, always slept after I munched out.

I guess I just grew out of it,I just quit dealing it,and smoking it,and then it went on to harder drugs,so thats the only thing I feel is wrong with weed. It does slow your whole body down, even the brain, but then again,I have friends that need weed to keep going,I guess they gotta chain smoke it to keep active.

I also agree with Simon those are symtoms of smoking weed.

sounds pretty much like a classic stoner profile to me.

It all sits with the gear i'm afraid.

what you have described was pretty much me up until about 3 years ago.

Thing was, although i knew I was being like that, i didnt want to stop, and like your BF would get very defensive about it.

Unfortunately the problem is he wont give up until he wants to. Until he gives up, he will be the same, there is no changing his behaviour without giving up.

Your BF has been smoking everyday for 20 years, i assume since he was a teenager. It was the same for me, i smoked everyday for about 13 years.

I didnt even know who i was really. I was afraid of giving up because i knew my life would change. Because i had been doing it for so long it kind of defined me. I wasnt me without a joint on the go.

I used to think i needed it because it made me calmer.

I've got to say that I feel so much better now, much more level headed and able to deal with social situations better than before. True, my life has changed, but for the better. i now live in the real world.

Until your BF comes round to feeling like giving up, i'm afraid to say he wont, no matter what you say. He sees it as his crutch and his friend. Whenever i had a bad day, i would so look forward to that smoke so It could all drift away and I could numb myself to all my problems. I saw it as my friend too, the one thing i could depend on to make all my worries go away.

facing life without a crutch is quite scary for a long time user.

I hope he does give up, for all your sakes. A baby shouldnt be brought up by a stoned parent.

It's all in how you handle nearly anything. Too much food is bad for you, too.

However, I've also seen people who smoke too much weed. It kills your motivation, wastes way too much money, gives you awful mood swings, etc. etc. Some people can't smoke just a little. For some, if they smoke at all, it's all the time.

This is my son ... I know he smokes weed from the minute he gets up.. all day... until he,s ready to go to bed...

It's soooo sad to see him ruining his life... no matter how hard I try ... I am the one with the problem... (for not understanding that weed is harmless).. he doesn,t see it as a problem.. :o

I think for MOST people it's equivalant to a cocktail in the evening. Not much difference between a glass of wine or a couple tokes.

But now if one is an alcoholic and is drinking morning til night, THAT'S a problem, same with any substance.

I know LOTS of light, casual pot smokers who are nothing at ALL like many of you are describing.

BTW, every sypmtom of his supposed addiction also fits the very commen disease: DEPRESSION !

And, many depresed people use substances, so it's harder to pin point which is stemming from which. Maybe approach him that way, see if getting on paxil or something lifts him up,and he might slow down on his own.

he always says he is going to stop (and only do it at weekends) i dont believe that can work, he does say he is totally depressed all the time and does nothing about it. he knows all the bad side effects i just dont get it, i really dont, i try hard to understand but really dont ever think life is that bad that i need to escape it by numbing my brain!!!

he holds down a good job but as soon as kids are in bed - he has a few smokes - he says he was fine when it was just hash but now that its grass he feels that its got a hold of him -

I smoke weed and drink 40's all the time...i've never had these problems...

maybe it's an underlying psychological issue and NOT weed?

Bad news.... the OP has three children at home, including the pot smoker's nine-month old.

The good news.... if the pot-smoking father is busted, instead of jail time, he'll likely now just get a fine, if new legislation is passed in Scotland.

No matter what the drug, the welfare of the children should always be the primary consideration, IMO. At least, under the new laws, if passed, the BF won't face the spectre of losing that good job and the support it brings into the family; rather, he'll just end up paying 'more' for his drugs if caught.

After 20 years of using, he likely won't be quitting any time soon. I wouldn't expect it. Accept that he's a user, just like he was when you met him, found him attractive, fell in love with him and produced a baby with him. What's next?

Devil Inside

All the things you describe are very typical of someone with a cannabis addiction. Can it be depression..sure...but more likely it is a substance induced depression. Stoners are not the most motivated people in the world...and their are major mood swings when you are coming in and out of an altered state.

Tiger, I know it is just weed, but don't fool yourself...you are with an addict. Get to a support group for loved ones of addicts, they will give you some support and insight.

OP, I've never touched an illegal drug in my life. I've seen neighbor's pot farms burned down out here where I live. That's about as close as I've gotten. Plenty of acquaintances were users back in the 70's (MJ/LSD, etc) and 80's-90's (coke) and I could tell by smell, behavior and personality changes. MJ was the easiest, by the smell. It was on their clothes and personal effects. As a non-smoker who grew up with smoking parents, I was sensitive to such odors.

Some of my stbx's friends used, coke and MJ primarily, and again, it was odor with the MJ and behavior/personality with the coke. Little things, like taking too long in the bathroom and entering in one mood and exiting in another. Stuff like that.

I accept that you 'didn't know'. Now you do. That's good information for the future. Learn from this. Hug the kids :)

I've been a pot smoker for years, sometimes daily. I do suffer from mood swings, but I suffer more when I'm not smoking. Nope, my libido isn't low. I don't sleep a lot and I'm not always tired. I'm not the most patient person, but I never have been. I am a personal hygiene MANIAC and if I go a day without a shower -- well, I never do, so I don't really know what would happen. I brush my teeth and visit the dentist regularly. I have plenty of friends who don't get stoned, I love seeing my family, and I don't have any sort of colds or stomach issues. As for delayed response when asked a question, not really -- I managed to get two undergrad degrees and a master's while smoking.

This sounds like a whole lot more than weed -- it sounds much more like a mood disorder. Has he ever seen a therapist?

I don't smoke daily or even weekly but every now and then I like to get weeded and it has no negative effect on my life.

Also, hash is MUCH stronger than grass, with a much greater concentration of THC. Hash is basically all resin, without the "filler" of the grass itself. So to say he was more coherent on hash is really confusing to me. This really, REALLY sounds like worsening depression!!
