low blood pressure

Recommended Posts

I think I have low blood pressure. I get dizzy after I eat, and I get hot flashes sometimes when I stand up too fast.

I think it has something to do with my diet, but I've been eating very clean, lots of fibrous vegetables and proteins every two hours for 5-6 meals a day.

I've also been taking a multivitamin daily and incorporating fish oil.

What am I missing? Should I go see a doctor?

As you know xpaper, I'm no doctor so I can't give you any medical advice. But if you believe it has to do with your blood pressure, you can have that tested in many drugstores, which have either paid or free machines.

Gah...I wasn't going to post this but I'm sincerely concerned about the possibility of an eating disorder with you, xpaper. Plse go see a doctor and get a proper dietary plan. He/she might recommend a dietician to you.

I am no doctor either. If you think it is your blood pressure, maybe go pick up a basic blood pressure meter at a department store. They are fairly reasonable. Then take a reading daily. Try to do it the same time of the day. Then take the readings to your doctor. Your diet seems pretty good. You have the eatings set good.

nobody's girl

Definitely see your doctor. I, too, am not a doctor, but it could be low blood pressure and/or low blood sugar. I have both and have had similar problems as you described. The doctor told me the dizziness after eating was because my blood sugar was low, then I'd eat and it would spike, then it would drop lower than before - causing the dizziness.

When is the last time you had an annual physical?

You may be borderline hypoglycemic.

I notice the same happens to me if/when I consume a lot of carbs, my blood sugar spikes and then it crashes.

As others mentioned, easy enough to check. Also, check your blood glucose levels prior to and after eating. If you trend to hypotension, diversion of blood to the digestive tract after eating (that stomach is a big muscle, after all) could cause your symptoms. It's not uncommon, if hypotensive, to have episodes of orthostatic hypotension, where the brain signals for more blood pressure when you think to stand aren't sufficient and your brain runs a bit low on pressure/volume. My mom had this problem when taking beta-blockers for her hypertension; they slowed her heart rate sufficiently and made it unresponsive enough to cause dizziness upon rising from a seated position.

Self-diagnosis is one part (reading, checking and trying different non-medical things), but, if you find something abnormal, or if it persists for more than a week, or worsens, get in to the doctor. Actually, considering doctor's schedules, I'd make the appointment now; you can always cancel it if unwarranted.

Those machines are generally inaccurate. If you really want to know if it is a blood pressure issue buy one of the $25 BP units from a drug store. You need to take your pressure multiply times during th day to get a real reading. It your pressure is low you should talk to a doc.

The other thing that can be causing your symptoms is dehydration.

Yes. Do see your doc and tell him how your feeling. There are many causes of dizzyness.. and a good doc should be able to help your find the cause. Good luck. Keep us posted.

To answer your question...yes.

See a doctor.

As mentioned, it could be blood pressure, blood sugar, lack of something in your diet, or even something else.

Most of the time it is a simple answer (not always), but our anxiety and fears convince us it is a worse problem. That is why one visit to the doctor can clear the air and dispel our fears.
