Lauriebell82
I do have an issue with taking a few (as in almost a week) off, what's wrong with that? I enjoy running, I think running does amazing things for my body and mind. I run 4-5 times a week, but I don't run very far. Recently it's been about 30 miles a week. My shoes are about 6-7 months old and in great shape, though I will bring this issue up to the running store when I go in for my next pair. 30 miles is a week is a lot! That's like 5-6 miles a day! What pace do you run at? I can see why you may be having pain, that's quite a bit to run every week. It's probably just soreness. I'm not saying you have to stop completely but maybe cut back and few days until the pain subsides.
Sweetcheripie
No swelling but I may try the ibuprofen. Though I always felt like pain meds were for emergencies only because they could be bad for your liver and stomach. You really should check with your doctor to see what you are dealing with but if it is muscle strain or a sprain or even ligaments or shin splints the doc will most likely suggest rest, Ibuprofen, icing and then heat. Meaplus3
I have a pain in my legs that I haven't felt before. It's on the inside of my legs, about 3-4 inches up from my ankles, and it's worse in the right leg. I have been running faster and for longer periods of time recently, so I'm sure that's what caused it. I thought I was just sore, but when I got on my treadmill yesterday it hurt so bad with each step I was barely able to finish 1 mile. Does this sound like shin splints? Should I worry? Or is it just harmless soreness? I have good running shoes, a good treadmill and I'm not new to working out or anything. You know it sounds to me like Shin splints. I use to run track.. way back when I was a youngster in high school. The pain you mentioned is exactly the sort of pain I had. My track coach told me.. that's what it was. Are your warming up and stretching before you run? Also by alternating between ice and heat I found relief. Hope you feel better. Mea:)

If you are adding more than 10% to your weekly mileage total at a time, that may be the culprit. As for taking time off, really - I would not run until you rest and heal. I am training for my first marathon and have a coach whose advice is absolutely GOLDEN. He has twice advised me to cut back or stop running, once because of fatigue, and once because I developed horrible blisters after a 14 mile run one day. I took a full week off, was anxious the whole time about losing fitness, but found that I bounced back to my full running schedule perfectly easily. Coach is adamant that we not run when injured or fatigued. If we don't let our bodies heal properly, we only set ourselves up for long term chronic pain/injuries.
Star Gazer
30 miles a week is a lot, A. Really. That's like marathon training... And at that rate, you should be getting new shoes every 10-16 weeks (that's 4 months TOPS), not 6-7. You REALLY need new shoes.

One of the best thing you can do for your running and your body is the occasional week off. You shoes are over used. While they still look good most shoes break down significantly after 350 miles. With newer material used in running shoes, they can visallutl look good well after significant break down occurs. A good rule of thumb is replacing them every 3 - 4 months. 6 months old @ 30 miles per week puts about 720 miles on your shoes. It is not surprising you experiencing overloading issue with your low legs. Take a couple of days off, get some new shoes, cut back your training for week or too.

I'm also going to get new shoes tomorrow.

Maybe try to change up your routine - cycling or swimming. Don't try to run through the pain - it can cause a stress fracture. Stretching, warming up, and new shoes will help in the future to prevent them.
Author allina
Are you going to FF? No not FF. I go to http://www.transportsrunswim.com/ which is very similar but way better IMO. It's local and many of their employees have been professional runners. Ouch. I'm sorry to hear about shin splints. Be really gentle on yourself. I will definitely be more cautious and work on prevention in the future.

New shoes should help; also, don't underestimate the value of taking it easy, and increasing intensity/mileage no more than 10% per week. Also -- I would really really urge you to take more time off and let the shin splints heal up before you start jogging again!!! The short-term loss in fitness is NOTHING compared to the potential long-term damage you could do by running while injured (stress fracture, etc). Good luck!

If walking around is fine, then try out a very very very slow jog and if you have any pain doing that, take more time off. Beyond that, you probably want to consult a medical professional. I'm going off of what my running coach tells us, and what one of the physical therapists I've seen recently told me.

Thanks SSG, and no worries, I'm just interested in opinions and experiences of others. I have access to a doctor or physical therapist if needed. I have been icing a lot and there is no pain from just walking around so I hope I can ease in to jogging now. :bunny:
