Randy
American Beauty, the Movie, in no typified an average American neighborhood. It was more a composite of the ugliness of a number of select neighborhoods. And then it was an exageration, as much of art is, in order to get the point accross that all is not rosy in life but it moves on nevertheless (and to get people to come and see it). Movies, like newspapers, cannot sell well (or win Academy Awards) if they portray the more mundane aspects of life such as people peacefully enjoying their day, couples having delightful conversations, traffic stopped at red lights, banks dispensing cash from legitimate accounts to law abiding citizens, gays minding their own business and seeking their own kind, men and women going to work and enjoying what they do in a healthy, drama-free environment, etc. That actually is the norm, in my opinion. Of course, on very rare occasion, a boy goes to school and wipes out his classmates with a gun, a motorists takes a swipe at another with a tire iron for following to closely and hitting his bumper, and people lose all their family and friends because they won't share their lotter winnings. This is not the norm. If you mind your own business, stay out of harms way, do right by people, use gentleness and courtesy in your dealings, and generally exercise good life practices of morality and ethics, you will seldom if ever fall into any of the trappings you saw in the movie. It was not an American Beauty except, perhaps, in box office receipts. P.S. I hope you did not mind my comments to your post, which you meant for your best friend.
