I posted a thread about my foray into the world of online dating a few days ago. Even though it's doubtful that I would ever go on a date with anyone from OkCupid, I've decided to keep my profile just to see what the whole online dating scene is like. One thing I've notices is that a lot of women that I get messages from - and actually, a lot of women there, in general - claim to be bisexual. It's like 30-40% of girls there describe themselves as such. It's kind of hard to believe that all these women are actually bisexual, unless OkCupid specifically caters to that kind of demographic, which it does not appear to.

So what's with this whole "pretend bisexual" thing? Is that some kind of a new trend? I know that there's a commonly held belief among women that guys are turned on by lesbians, but that's largely a porn fantasy thing. I don't think too many guys would be particularly excited by the idea of their real life girlfriend being a carpet muncher.

Thoughts?

I think girls are generally more open to the idea of bisexuality - to the point where even if they're merely bi-curious, or slightly bisexual but far closer to the hetero end of the spectrum, they still call themselves bisexual.

On the other hand, if a mostly-straight guy ever fantasizes about anything even close to other males, being penetrated anally, etc, no way in hell he'd even consider the possibility of being bi-curious. It's just more stigmatized. So the guys who claim to be bisexual or gay, truly are very bisexual/gay.

If by bad news you mean girls making out with each other and talking dirty. Then yes, save yourself

I don't think this is necessarily true. If you look at ancient Greece and Rome, for example, most men in those societies were bisexual. Ancient Greeks even had an expression "women for procreation, men for pleasure". Those were societies where homoerotic behavior was actively encouraged, to a point where it was thought that there was something seriously wrong with you if you only liked women. Contrary to what the so-called "gay rights activists" would have you believe, homosexuality/bisexuality is often a product of social conditioning rather than "natural urges" (although the latter is certainly possible as well).

So I'm still inclined to believe that most so-called "bisexual" women classify themselves as bisexual because they think it's the "cool" thing to do.

They're bicurious. Most of the time their only experience has been kissing another girl.

Alot of guys are either turned off or turned on.

I don't know, but I think this chick at the hardware store was hitting on me today. She was supercute, too. I haven't been smiled at like that in... a long time. Definitely made my mind do a double take. :D

Whatever. Stop attention whoring in my thread (that's what the gym/pool/tennis court is for). We are discussing a serious issue here...

I don't think you can imply that according to "the ancient greeks" everything was gay-o-rama if you're basing that opinion on the writings of a flaming philosopher and his group of gay friends.

... and yeah, I think a great deal of women who wave the bisexuality flag are doing it for attention. That insecurity would be a turn-off IMO that far outweighs any implied sexual adventurousness... but then again, I'm not a dude.

Greek homosexuality was primarily practiced in the privileged classes. It was not prevalent or encouraged among everyone else.

Those would be the choices, yeah.

Well, you asked about the current situation, not ancient Greece. :) Admit it, what would you do if you found out your best buddy in the soccer team was bisexual? What would all the other friends do?

Female sexuality tends to be more fluid. It's also more socially acceptable, as some have pointed out, so maybe that's why. If male bisexuality was more socially acceptable, then maybe guys would be more fluid too.

Some women do it for attention - mainly to turn their boyfriends on - and some do it because they truly are bisexual and aren't afraid to recognize it. I would say the key is knowing how to differentiate between the "bar bisexuals" and the ones who really are just open-minded.

Women now use sex and sex appeal even more to land a man.. Saying they are "bi sexual" is similar to them all saying these days that the "love sports".

They don't have much of an identity or know what role they should assume, so they act bisexual to land a man.
