I let a good one get away--again

Help, just wanting to get back into dating so I went to hear my BIL's band last night. I had a great time and talked to several folks, and really liked this one man. He's close to my age and we had a lot in common. He's extremely intelligent, if his job is anything to go by. I could tell he really liked me and as long as we were just talking about stuff, I was very confident. But at the end of the evening as we were getting ready to leave, I got shy. He said something about seeing me again and we traded phone numbers and I don't remember a lot of what I said as it seems my brain scrambled but I guess I should have asked him to walk me to my car (across the street) but instead went over to see about my BIL who had his head in his hands so i was worried about him. BIL was fine and when I turned around, Mr good-looking was gone. I've done this before too--I get shy and start sending off not-interested type vibes, even when I really am. Why do I keep shooting myself in the foot?

 

BTW, this generally happens with the type of men who aren't extremely confident with women--the kind I'm generally attracted to. The players you can't beat off with a stick--I had a couple of those following me around too and they were a lot harder to discourage.
