quankanne
wikipedia has a really good, indepth piece on the subject. frankly, it sounds like a kind of cult, like santería ...
NoIDidn't
I thought it sounded similar to Santeria as well. And from the little that I read, it is. Both are a mix of native beliefs and Catholicism. From what I read, La Santa Muerte is a goddess of Death. I saw a picture that was basically the Grim Reaper. Seems she has a similar role to Hades in watching over and claiming the souls of the dead. I would be careful with defining either as a cult, though. These native beliefs have endured even the Catholic Church's trying to subvert them.
LucreziaBorgia
It is Holy Death, or 'Saint Death' as I like to say. I have a couple of tall red votive candles with Santa Muerte on them that I picked up from the Mexican section of one of our local grocery stores. I think of Santa Muerte as the photo-negative image of the Virgin, both in looks and in concept. The way I explain to people: you pray to the Virgin for the sake of others, for altruistic reasons. You pray to Santa Muerte for your own sake: whether you are asking for good things, or for bad. Be sure to offer alcohol and/or cigarettes (Baron Samedi likes those too, apparently - he is a deity who is skeletal and wears a top hat) when you do.
