underpants
What do you think? Anyone done either? Should one 'dig deeper' or 'bring it'? Muscle confusion or Insane Cardio? Thoughts?
N.Colony
From what I gather, p90X works. I've never used it though. Over the years, I've just combined cardio and weight lifting 3 to 4X per week plus a good/clean diet. I personally recommend cardio AND muscle training AND a clean diet. cuppa
From what I gather, p90X works. I've never used it though. Over the years, I've just combined cardio and weight lifting 3 to 4X per week plus a good/clean diet. I personally recommend cardio AND muscle training AND a clean diet. I never tried P90X but was told that this is similar to crossfit (and I've been on crossfit training for the past 3 months). If this is true (blend of cardio, HITT/Tabata exercises, and weight), then I think it's much better than steady state cardio. I definitely hit a plateau after my steady state cardio and after I switch to crossfit, my stamina improves 1000% (no kidding). When I played badminton, I could barely do jump smash. Now, I could do 80 box jump with 20" box + 1 bumper plate. I bet if I go back to playing badminton/volleyball again, I improved a lot in my spikes/smashes. So to answer your question....dig deeper and go with muscles confusions. Plus, it makes workout very interesting.
xpaperxcutx
They're both pretty much the same to me since they both use methods that contribute to " muscle confusion". The only thing different is that Tony Horton's been with BeachBody for a long time and Shaun T came onto the scene with Hip Hop Abs. What you can expect is to never get bored with the workouts. If you have the money to try both, do it.
New Again
What do you think? Anyone done either? Should one 'dig deeper' or 'bring it'? Muscle confusion or Insane Cardio? Thoughts? BRING IT!!!! I've never done the Insanity thing though. After reading the other responses will add that I have been P90Xing for a couple years, have all the equipment and videos and stuff...except the yoga one that I let someone borrow and never got back. I love it. I did it with my bf at the time and he loved it also. Great results without dieting, though he did follow the diet regimen and protein shake thing for awhile. 2sure
I thought I was in pretty good shape until I got the P90X. It was just too hard for me. Ive gone back to a personal trainer for now, hoping to improve to the point that I can do the P90X at home and save some money/time.
sneak817
It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I have 2 roommates and they're both been doing p90x for about 4 months now. Both are following the diet and exercise plan to the T. One is 6'4 and started at 230 and he is now 175, but lacks any muscle showing. The other is 6'1 and started at 170 and is now 175 with very little change. I was against doing p90x, and decided on getting a gym membership instead (weight training only). I'm 6'0 and started at 180 and I'm now 175, and built tons of muscle. I followed their diet plan, and we all drank protein shakes daily. After 4 months I have the best results hands down.. P90x is great for losing weight and getting over all health, but if you're trying to look like you jumped out of the movie 300, or a Men health magazine forget it! Don't believe the hype bro.. Here's our body fat %'s if your wondering.. guy one 29% - p90x for 4 months 16% (but very little muscle showing) guy two 22% - p90x for 4 months 18% (some muscle showing) me 23% - weight training only 4 months 18% ( huge muscle growth )

If I were to recommend only one workout plan for everyone, regardless of their goal, whether to gain muscle, get 'cut', or just lose weight, I'd recommend weight training every time. Weight training is able to consistently challenge your muscles in a way that no other workout can. It generally burns more calories during and after the workout than a normal cardio workout. The reason P90X is so difficult at first is because it's so different, and the body just isn't used to that sort of workout. This is especially true of those who have weight trained for a while, think they are in fantastic shape, and then get their asses kicked by P90X. It's not that they aren't in good shape; it's just that this workout is quite different, and the body must get accustomed to it. I quoted sneak's post because it makes a good point. You have to do everything...you cannot stick with just one type of workout plan...you have to switch things up and do a little of everything...each type of workout has strengths and weaknesses...and each will offer something different that will give you more complete physical fitness... 2sure
OK, I get the idea of the P90X and I like a work out video - but like I said its really just too hard for me. I do like weights especially since I am over 40. What I want from a good work out, and this is going to sound terrible...is just to be able to eat what I want and still look good in a bathing suit. Thats always been my goal and easily enough reached. But, since I am getting older I need to be more religious about it, especially my muscle tone. Anyone know of a work out video similar, but not as hard?? I only want 30 mins a day - I run too.
USMCHokie
Anyone know of a work out video similar, but not as hard?? I only want 30 mins a day - I run too. Tony Horton has a watered down version of P90X that is meant as an intro to this sort of workout system. It's called the Power 90 In-Home Boot Camp. I've read mixed reviews of it...some people say it's a great way to gradually work your body into shape to tackle P90X, while others have said it's a little too boring and simple... Star Gazer
A male friend of mine went from chubby to insanely cut in like 4 months using P90X. The transformation was AMAZING to watch. His wife, and a few of my female friends, have tried it too... but found it too difficult. I'd love to do it myself, but I think I'd fail as well. Have any women here found it do-able? New Again
Have any women here found it do-able? Yes. But obviously I had to work up my number of reps and so on. For about the first month of this, after pushing myself during the initial workout I couldn't make it all the way through the Ab-RipperX. And, now I think I have great abs..haha Pics or it didn't happen? Juuust kidding...I got giddy all of a sudden. Edited March 23, 2010 by New Again
Star Gazer
NA, did you just use MUCH lighter weight, or...? I'm just concerned that after spending that much money for a set of DVDs I'm going to be standing in our workout room staring at the TV and laughing (or maybe crying) at how ridiculously hard (impossible?) it is. 2sure
After the first part I mostly just laid on the floor breathing hard and watching the TV thinking it would be easier to just not eat.

I'm just concerned that after spending that much money for a set of DVDs I'm going to be standing in our workout room staring at the TV and laughing (or maybe crying) at how ridiculously hard (impossible?) it is. I started out doing 5lbs (I have the ones where it's one bar and you just flip it all around to pick up the weight you want); I still only do around 15lbs....I don't want to be jacked, just fit and toned. There's also modifications and stuff....the girl in the videos is still way tougher than I am though.
sneak817
I agree with USMCHokie the first p90 is great place to start if you can't tackle p90x. And you're right USMCHokie you have to keep your body challenged in order to create change. Personally, I would rather just mix up my weight lifting, or add more weight, then do 5 sets of 20 of some crazy p90x exercise. lol.. I'll be the first to admit p90x "ad ripper X" had me hurting for days, but then again my roommates can complete the workout without any issues, but they don't even have a 4 pack. And to all you people going to the gym please figure out how to workout correctly.. You're killing yourself by pushing to much weight with horrible form!! Building muscle is not hard if you know how to do it. Follow these rules and you'll get there I promise. 1) eat clean, or at least eat clean for dinner. 2) workout 1 body part a day, or only add secondary muscles. Example: Chest and triceps one day, Back and biceps another. I see this all the time people getting one set of every machine in gym! Don't do this!! 3) aim for perfect form 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down! Slowing down will challenge your muscle, and you'll get more out of your workout. 4) aim for 3-4 set with 8 reps each set. If you can do more then 12 reps (with perfect form) then add more weight. If you can't do 8 reps (with perfect form) lower the weight. It's that easy.. 5) drink a protein shake 10-30 after your workout. This is pretty basic stuff, but i see soooo many people skipping them. Sorry for going off subject guys, but I think it had to be said. Edited March 23, 2010 by sneak817

I have weights of different weights (that sounded funny), a pull up bar (screwed into the door jam of our workout room), a bosu ball, a large exercise ball. Anything else? Your preference only, but might want to use a sticky mat for some of the things (besides the yoga and stuff, there are several exercises that are hard to do on carpet or hard floor without that added traction)...mostly just the weights and pull up bar though. They try to upsell you on so many points.
Star Gazer
Oh yeah, I forgot. We have two mats. A thinner sticky yoga mat, and a thicker folding one.
Star Gazer
So I just posted the same question on my FB wall, and the overwhelming response is for Insanity. I'm so confused!
phineas
I've started following the FST-7 plan. Which is basically heavy compound movements followed by 7 set's of 12 reps with an isolation movement. Followed by 30 min.s of cardio. Insane pumps. I actually had stretch marks on my bi-ceps the next day. You also need to choke down the food to build the muscle. Lots of protien, calories, carbs & some fat. After you have built some decent calorie burning muscle this way you switch it up. increase the cardio & switch up to lighter weight on the compound movements & higher reps then blast out the 7 sets of 12 isolation movement. The 7 sets are supposed to pump your muscles with blood to the point where they are stretching from within. Sort of like blowing up a balloon. Maybe when my gut is gone & I have the muscle I want i'll try something else to see if I can get totally ripped. I havn't seen my 6-pack since college so it might be nice to be reunited again. Author underpants
Hey, Lots of responses. Thanks. I'm currently in the 3rd week of Insanity. A friend is doing P90X. So I guess we have a little comparison going on. We also hold each other accountable. So far we both hate it. I know that any regime is about weight, cardio, nutrition and most of all consistency. Seems like P90X loves a pull up and Insanity loves a push up.
Star Gazer
So Undies... how is it going for you? Are you noticing results yet?
Author underpants
So Undies... how is it going for you? Are you noticing results yet? It's going. I hate the warm up. Oh the dreaded warm up. The hardest part is putting the dvd in. Maybe a little in the results area. It is still early. My core is better, tighter. I still can't get through an entire workout without taking extra breaks. However, I can do more then I was able to in the beginning. So that is an improvement. I puked at the end of the first workout. Haven't since so another improvement? I just recorded my stats yesterday so I can have point of reference to see what changes my body might transform into. 47 more days to go. cuppa
hmm...I tried P90X Plyo tonight, I barely sweat. I don't even think my heart rate went up over 150. On opposite, when I did crossfit or kickboxing, I went all the way to 190. I don't even reach an endorphin high....which series of P90X is the toughest? Is plyometric tough? I think I will stick with my crossfit and kickboxing
