longlegzs80
Everyone knows I went to school for art, but I feel like I don't have a creative mind. Being inspired or finding inspiration in someones artwork is so hard for me. Just finding inspiration period is hard for me. But with graphic design, you need to be creative on demand. And maybe someone can help me out or point me in the right direction as far as how to get the creative juices flowing. HELP ME OUT PLEASE.
moimeme
This is not something that can be answered well in a post. Go to http://www.amazon.com and search on 'creativity' in books. There are tons of books you can read about this.

Arabess
Is there are reason why you chose the field of 'Art'? There had to be a reason.....and in this reason is possibly where your creative juices are hidden. If not, you may very well want to consider going into another field. EnigmaXOXO
But with graphic design, you need to be creative on demand. ...And therein is your problem. A creative person will find it difficult to find inspiration within the confines of *someone else's* vision. I have several artist friends who tried taking their skills into the computer market and are beyond frustrated with the limitations. Most of the time, even when they are inspired to come up with a unique concept, it is altered and changed to the point they no longer recognize the work as their own! --- Same goes for writers who turn their manuscripts into editors and are startled when they no longer recognize what they had originally turned in!!! It will absolute ZAP the fun right out of it! Are you currently working for someone else, or are you a freelance graphic artist? And how much artistic freedom are you allowed? Author longlegzs80
I choose art because I love it. I enjoy working on the computer. But what scares me is the little amount of knowledge that I have on the graphic design field. And I do alot of reading and online searching and reading, but there is just so much to know. I would be a complete idiot if I end up getting a job in the field because of my lack of knowledge. But, I am a creative person. I am good with the programs, and I have alot of creativity, it is just really really hard to know if the message that I am trying to send out is the right message. I have been sketching, trying to create new exciting art, but nothing excites me because I don't know if the message is being communicated right to lets say a target audience or to potential employers. So much to know and so little time. I know this is the wrong forum to bring about all my creative problems on, but I get alot of help from everyone so I am going to take a stabe in the dark. Author longlegzs80
I am not a freelance artist or an artist in the field yet. I thought about doing the freelance thing, but I was along with other students in my classes were highly encouraged to get a job in the field. Freelancing would be a great experience, but I live at home and woundn't be able to have an apartment in several months, along with not having one of the softwares that graphic artists use. So, with the lack of knowledge there and the trying to learn a variety of things about the field, I am just so beside myself. Plus trying to rework the portfolio and doing promo pieces to send to companies. As far as getting into the field, I have been trying. But no luck. So in my time, I have been buying books, getting books from the library, doign reading, researching, finding inspiration etc., to help me get the juices going and get a good understanding of design. I did do freelancing for 2 weeks. But that was for another company and that did not work out only because everything was communicated through email and with me not being able to speak to the client to get a full understanding and feel for what they want, it just did not work. The women who is kinda part of the family I suppose just stopped emailing me. I never got paid either for those 2 weeks. So, overall freelancing I won't do unless I am my own boss. But if I have to do it where I Work for another company and that is how we communicate is through email, that will not work, because when I did the work for 2 weeks, there was such a lack of communication where the employer did not contact me until after afew days after when the project would be due. So, I don;t know. I am just trying to get inspiration here just to get my creative juices comming through. I do love art and would not change that for the world, but not sure why it is so hard for me to be creative.
UCFKevin
In my short time on this planet, I've learned one VERY important thing. You CANNOT force creativity. You can't force talent, and most of the time you can't learn it either. You either have it or you don't. A very close friend of mine, God bless him, was an English major and I would read his stuff and hear his ideas and...sweet bastard, they are awful. All of them. Every single one of them. I never really had the heart nor the balls to tell him as such, but damn...
EnigmaXOXO
I’m not sure if I’m interpreting your question correctly…but are you trying to find a field where you could combine your interest in computers with your love of art? There are dozens of avenues in which to pursue, but its important to get a general idea about what each profession requires, what it might pay, and how the market is for that particular career in your area. It helps to speak with people directly in the field who can give you a better perspective. Here’s a website which gives a basic description of the fields related to “Graphic Art” and what they entail…as well as the average salary for that position in your area. http://www.salary.com Select the Job Category of “Graphic Arts” and it will give you a drop-down menu of the different fields in this area. By highlighting the different job titles, then clicking on “read job description” at the lower left, it will give you a brief description. Of course, this will do NOTHING to get those creative juices flowing. That will have to come from within you, but only if you find a niche that you really enjoy! Now, here’s a silly suggesting I thought I’d toss out there for you (a shot in the dark of my own). How about creating your own online “greeting card” or “E-card” site? You’ll have all the freedom in the world and there are software programs already out there to help you set up. Now, I must leave the room before I get “boooooooed.”
Author longlegzs80
I definitly have the talent to be in the field, I just think it is the lack of knowledge. And all creative people need a pick me up boost in their creative ability, so it is just inspiration. And that is kinda what I need, and sure I go out side and look around, look through books, look at posters etc, but there is not much that pops out at me and makes me want to pick up on the technique being used or whatever it is. So, I know I have the talent, the desire to learn, it is just at this point, I find my creativity just not happening. Not sure why, but I think it has to do with me working on my portfolio and being such a perfectionist that it is hard to like anything that I do. So, who knows. Thanks everyone for responding. Author longlegzs80
ENIGMA: I have the knowledge of what an entry designer makes and even the other more experienced designers make. So, I do know that stuff, I know about branding, target audience etc. But I feel like it is not enough. Like I am lacking in knowledge. Maybe with all this worring and tension and trying to get things done that is what has been preventing me to be creative. I know how to go about it, but as far as doing self promotional stuff for lets say a potential employer, I find it so difficult to think of something. So, other then that, thats it. I would love to have an online porfolio someday to show all of you, but I need to take a class on web software stuff so I can create a kick bum website. So, that will come in time. Then the greeting card thing I would be kick bum at because I am good at drawing. I know what I can really see myself doing, it is just as far as now and getting my work out there for employers to see is what has been difficult. Thank you for the advice. And no you are not going to get boooed.
