The term "old lady"...is it derogatory?

Recommended Posts

Do you folks think its derogatory to describe some dudes girlfriend or wife as his "old lady"?

As in "your old lady won't let you go out drinking tonite?", or, "man your old lady is acting strange, is it that time of the month?"

Yes, it's disrespectful and derogatory. But so is "old man". We don't use either, not even to tease each other.

I don't tend to use it but a good friend uses it all the time to refer to her husband and my husband. It doesn't bother me, and it doesn't bother me to be refered to as old lady either. I just don't tend to use it.

I thought it was funny back as a teen, and still do as an....old lady ! It's just such a silly term, I can't see being offended by it. ( though I also can't see finding it suitable in a real life, long term usage, more as a joke here and there.)

I only use that term when I know a woman is getting to be insecure about her age. If she's a little heavy, then I refer to her as "fat old lady". It's a term of endearment.

I think it is all in how you use it Alpha..

ie: My Dad use to call himself "The Old Man".. you thought you could fool the old man didn't you?

The way he used it on himself made it okay to call him the old man.. which we did.. it was a term of endearment to him.

But I can guarantee you that if I called my Mom or Wife my old lady or the old lady that it would be a derogatory term...

Speaking of which.. the old lady and I are having sex tonight ..

'old man' is a compliment at my age, considering 'dead' might be the alternative :D

Whenever I said it, and it was common back when I was younger, I never meant it in a derogatory way, and it was generally said to male friends, as in 'is the old lady coming to the races this weekend?' They used the reference for their wives/girlfriends and I just picked it up. A minor stain in my 'nice guy' clothing, I guess ;)

I haven't used it in conversation in probably twenty years...

Sure it can, happens all the time. Deaf people used to often be referred to as 'dumb', which is now understood to be derogatory. There were a plethora of terms for women and 'minority' races which once were commonplace and now are classed as derogatory. People with Downs' Syndrome were once called 'Mongoloids' until that was understood to be racist and derogatory, then they were more generally called 'retarded' and now there is a massive movement to have that word stricken as well, as calling someone a 'retard' is widely considered a derogatory slur. Times change and so does language.

That said, I don't think 'old man' or 'old lady' is particularly derogatory, it's just a colloquialism. Granted, it wouldn't be my favorite pet name, personally.

ok you got some of it is wrong your either deaf or deaf and dumb.the later term is for people that where born deaf as it severlly retards the learning process.causing in 80% of all causes retardation slured speach and inapropriate actions.i used to have 2 friends that where deaf and dumb and thats what they and there parents called it.but they dont like deaf and retarted.as the downs syndrom goes they where called mongaloids do to the thickness of the skull at first they thought it was a recesive gene causing reverse evolution in that person know we know and i agree we shouldent call people retarted or mongos

"my old lady" isn't derogatory, but it *does* date you back to the hippie era! Kinda like Hispanic guy calling his girlfriend "mi ruca" brands him as a gangbanger.

I think you are well-meaning, here, but...the term 'deaf and dumb' was often used interchangably with the simpler 'dumb'. The word dumb in both instances meant 'mute' and referred to a person who couldn't speak; many profoundly deaf people can speak but for those deaf-from-birth this requires special training, and many deaf people are uncomfortable with speaking as they know they sound 'off' to hearing people, or they are culturally opposed to it and prefer to use sign lanuage and written language exclusively to communicate. Being deaf made people harder to educate in the old days, yes, but deafness does not inherently retard the learning process when caught early by people who understand how to educate non-hearing persons, and it certainly does not cause retardation. Most deaf people still have perfectly good vision and mental faculties and the sign language for the deaf is a rather beautiful and rich language I have yet to master after years of study.

Even if your friend acknowledged the term 'deaf and dumb' as applicable to himself it is widely considered offensive and derogatory in modern deaf culture.
