TwilightSky
Being able to improve my life has been a constant struggle for me, because I feel too anxiety-ridden/paranoid/depressed. Some might suggest serotonin, but this goes beyond depression. I think I need a heavy concentration of endorphines to give me an overwhelmingly good feeling so I can concentrate on improving my current existence. Any tips on how to do this? norajane
One natural way is exercise. Read up on it - post-exercise, lots of good endorphins are released in your body. When I used to run, I would very occasionally get a runner's high. OMG - that was way better than drugs. I couldn't count on getting it, of course, and I don't get that with other exercise. But it speaks to the power of physical exercise on your mind. But you need to exercise for at least 30 minutes before the endorphins are released, and it should be a cardio exercise that somewhat strenuous. A stroll around the block isn't going to do it. Star Gazer
NJ beat me to it! For sure, exercise! Running is one of the best highs out there...
Author TwilightSky
I already know about the exercise thing, though that is appreciated. But are there supplements out there that could boost endorphine levels?
norajane
Have you tried the "exercise thing"? I doubt there are any supplements that have been tested in clinical trials and validated, unless they are actual drugs proscribed by a doctor or the illegal variety like ecstasy and pot. Some say St. John's Wort is helpful, but so is "comfort food" for that matter. Have you tried meditation and deep breathing? That also works. And eating chili peppers. And chocolate. Although you don't get the same rush as you do with exercise. Edited May 3, 2010 by norajane

I guess I was trying to say I need an overwhelming dose to counter the naturally occuring negative thoughts. Apperciate the continued suggestions though.
mem11363
TS, What social anxiety comes from exercising? Not following that. What is the source of your negative thoughts? Is it possible you have a blood sugar problem? When my blood sugar gets screwed up it wreaks havoc in my head..... Tried all those,...the social anxiety from exercising kind of negates that. I guess I was trying to say I need an overwhelming dose to counter the naturally occuring negative thoughts. Apperciate the continued suggestions though.

I have also heard that St Johns Wart helps...also there are precursers that develope dopamine , seretonin and epinephrine (I think this is right, but did a study on this a while back). If I remember correctly L-tyrosine and other aminos build seritonin....I think the B- vitamins do too. You guys are great...I was going to start a thread on depression...after being through so much since 9/11, I'm way burned out and basically still in shock....I've got to pull out of this as I am over medicating (for me...over medicating is like a quarter of the normal doses, but have a sensitive system....and am drinking too (one beer gets me drunk)...I stay home when this happens....tomorrow when I'm sober better tell the story and get some advice. I am a responsible when I'm jacked up. Edited May 3, 2010 by pureinheart

GrayClouds
SAMe has been shown to be quite effective and has been was judged superior to placebo and is as effective as tricyclic antidepressants. It works quickly but can produce mania in some. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12420702 Edited May 6, 2010 by GrayClouds

Pacman
I'd suggest exercising. You can take pills, Omegas, fish oils, but at the end of the day exercising is the best way to boost endorphins. When you exercise not only are you boosting your endorphins but you are also getting your body into great shape. Its a win/win situation. Nothing beats the feeling of sweating, breathing hard and really digging deep only to smile and tell yourself "great job" OR Volunteer Edited May 21, 2010 by Pacman
