I overdid the exercise and now I can't walk :(

OK, so I ended up exercising every day of this week, and I did lots of "step climbing" type of exercise, coupled with runnning etc. I am not very fit and am trying to lose weight. I felt my muscles were sore after the first day (especially the leg muscles) but I pushed myself every day anyway.

Today I woke up and I can not walk or sit down. I mean, the muscles in my legs that are required for both of those tasks hurt so much that I can only hobble about and sit if I do it extremly slowly. And that is around my apartment, I can't imagine how bad things would be outside.

I have a day before I go to work and I don't want to go to work moving like that (even hobbling about causes me extreme calve muscle pain). Any tips on how to help my muscles heal in a day? Obviously, exercising today is out of the question :)

Do I take anti-inflammatories? I dunno what to do - at this point, walking to the toilet is really difficult :(

Try ibuprofen and a warm shower or bath. Once the heat has you loosened up a bit, do some gentle streatching and try going for a short walk.

Brainygirl is right on. It sucks now because your muscles have sustained a lot of micro tears, and they need to be repaired. So just take it easy until you recuperate 100%. The upside is your muscles will be a lot stronger once you get back to it.

If I were you I wouldn't even get up to go to the bathroom and just stay in bed with the hot water bottle on the legs and watch tv.

Just walk when the pain goes away, take ibuprofen etc.

Hope you get well soon.

If you don't move it will only get worse and you will end up worse than you started. Be slow, be easy, don't force anything, but KEEP MOVING!

Workouts that end like this are my favorite workouts, I LOVE that burnt out feeling. Hiking always does this to me, maybe I"ll go next weekend :bunny::bunny:

Sounds like a fun plan. I would have gone this weekend, but its rained for a solid week and the place I go is currently under water. Maybe I should have planned a swim instead.

I did take my dog for a nice long walk around the neighborhood. He's a seven month old dachshund and already will walk with me off lead. I have to watch out for other dogs though, he's so small they seem to want to tear into him.

Maybe we have a different idea of hiking, I mean hiking up mountains, if you don't go above the treeline it's just a walk in the woods ;)

Or maybe you just meant ALOT of rain hah

Ibuoprofen is a godsend! You'll be shocked at how 2-3 ibuprofen will decrease the inflammation and ease the pain. After that, you might even feel like a short (I emphasize SHORT) easy walk just to keep your exercise habit going.

Dude I live in Kansas. DO you know how many mountains are in Kansas? I have a reclaimed strip mine area that's been converted into trails. But it floods and gets swampy.

And yes, its been very very very rainy here. As in flood warnings in the county south of where I am.

I love it when you are really burnt out but wake up fine the next day... When you wake up crippled its time to let your body heal for few days

I'm an adventurer at heart, I moved from ames to iowa with a pick up truck, 300 dollars, and a twinkle in my eye. I got an apartment that day, a job in 2 days, and lived there for 4 years before I got bored and came back to maine

So you COULD go with what you know, or you could just take the plunge! Come on do it!

Look in the health section of a department store. Its pretty common, it will be in a bag or carton and look like medium sized irregular crystals.

Its formula is MgSO4*7H2O

Not that the chemical formula is all that important.

Thanks :)

I am going to drag myself to one now.

Weirdly, despite the extreme soreness I am feeling good. My mood is also really good even though there is nothing in particular that I am happy about.

I love a good sore from exercises. At some point, if I didn't get sore, I feel like I didn't exercise enough ha! Feeling good, yeah, that's the endorphin released from the body, the best stress reliever.

So yeah, soaking in epsom salt will help (many drug stores have them, I got mine from long drugs and it's cheap, $3 for a huge bag). Another idea is foam rolling. If your gym has one, do some rolling in your calf and find the sore spot, concentrate in the area by rolling back & forth. It will hurt but you will feel better afterward.

Ahh, the endorphins, they are addictive aren't they?

Drink plenty of water before and after working out and be sure to stretch thoroughly afterward. Then alternate your cardio and weights days so you are working your body in different ways. You should take at least one day off per week totally.

No pain, no gain

Love the pain, push your body and it will respond. Every month I do a 4hr 100mi bike ride and in the summer it is brutal, I loose 6lbs of water weight even though I drink 72oz of liquid. When I finish I am a wet noodle.

First thing I do is drink 25grams of protein in a shake this will replenish your glycogen stores if you do it in the first 30min. Next a couple of Ibuprofin for the inflamation and then I have to spend about 2hrs drinking water and recovering my hydration.

Love it
