I really don't know now which one I want to do.:o

I watched a couple documentaries on each type and Krav Maga does look pretty awesome. Brazilian Jujitsu seems to entail a lot of grappling on the ground and I can't see myself getting into a situation where I'm on the ground wrestling with someone.

It really is going to come down to: (1) what's available in my area; (2) which style fits me best; and (3) cost.

They all do look awesome and they have a goal in different priorities to teach you self defense, what you really need is a weapon and the speed of Usan Bolt, a combat sport and self discipline.

As a one on one combat sport, JuJitsu at first proved superior to the striking arts because basically they were sparing. They ran right through the defense. Wrestlers saw those first fights as the Brazilians were proclaiming their Kung Fu was the greatest Kung Fu and then the Mixed Martial Arts champions came from wrestlers who were able to stop the Brazilians from taking them down and doing their specialized thing.

In the meantime the other martial arts who had proclaimed street fighting creed were in trouble. In the ring they were losing. So they modified their styles to add some grabbing and wrestling to become like Hapkido and the original JuJitsu with the special twist of the specific martial arts being sold added on. In their demonstrations they put limits on ground time pointing out that nobody comes at you in a street fight alone. They are with buddies showing off and probably high.

Since the fight is never one on one if you are your back doing some perfect jujitsu technique it doesn't take someone with master Tae Kwan Do skills to kick you in the head. And since this is real he does not have an empty foot but more likely has a steel toed boot.

I would like being taking Martial Arts but I am not sure which type I should choose. There seems to be several, which I've looked into briefly and I am considering one of these three:

Kung Fu

Karate

Aikido

I'm not looking to get into it just for "self defense", but more so for strength training both physically and mentally (I'm getting older and I am starting to notice that I pull muscles easier, especially in my back - so I don't want anything that's going to land me in the hospital).

So my questions are:

1.) Which type would be the best for a female

2.) What can I expect to pay on a monthly and/or annual basis (I live in the northeast).

3.) Which is better - private training or group/classes?

Thanks. :)

Strength training? Endurance? Go with a grappling art, like judo, jujutsu, or "Brazilian Jiu-jitsu," but be forewarned that any one of these are really demanding. You'll probably wear out pretty quickly until you build up your cardiovascular endurance.

Thanks for the help/suggestions everyone. Martial arts has to wait a month or so, from a financial standpoint, but I did take a free course for Kick Boxing so I've got that under my belt :) and I'll see about the others.

Maybe you could visit an MMA gym, where you might actually get a little bit of everything instead of just one traditional martial art. Of, if one of those isn't available, maybe you could do Muay Thai part-time and "Brazilian Jujitsu" the remainder of your time. You'd have the devastating striking of Muay Thai and take-down and grappling techniques of BJJ.
