So I had a really bad ingrown toenail last year that I didn't do anything with for months. It got really bad and would bleed all of the time. I finally went to the doctor but because I didn't have insurance I had to pay a few hundred dollars to have it removed.

Now it's sorta almost grown all of the way back but just a few weeks ago it started to get infected or something again. I have a small bump on the left side of my toe. It almost looks like the nail is growing in at a weird angle.

Has anyone had an ingrown toenail and had to have the nail removed? Is there a possibility that I might have to have it permanently removed if it doesn't grow back properly?

I had it done, I had a specialist do it rather than go to the hospital or some random GP. It was about $200 but worth it.

They don't remove the whole nail or anything, just the sides. They numbed my toe with a general anesthetic and cut into my toe from the bottom of the nail on the side to see where it had grown to. Cut it out, bandaged me up and away I went.

It hurt like hell when they took the pressure bandage off the next day though. But all was worth it, they hurt so much when you kick it on something or whatever.

Yeah, mine was really bad and the doctor said it was best to just remove the whole thing so that's what I did. Now it's growing back and it looks all jacked up. It sucks. I have to go back to the doctor on Monday. I hope it doesn't have to be removed again. That sucked. :p

Ha! It's starting to swell up again like it did last time. I'm screwed. Two more days until my toenail knows it's fate and it doesn't look good. :(

It was really bad last time. I was running around playing football last year at my mom's house when I accidentally stepped on my toe and it started bleeding everywhere. There were pools of blood all over the floor. It was insane. :D

Not strong enough

Well, it seems like the nails been removed so this post might be alittle to late, but I had a similar problem and lived with it for a long time until i figured out a solution, it wasnt the fastest but it didnt involve the removal of the nail.

I would take a bath instead of a shower everynight, soaking the toe seemed to soften the nail some and make it more plyable, after i got out of the bath, i would soak the toe in peroxide after that to kill any of the germs that may have been in the bath water. Then i would take a clean tooth pick (one of the individaly packed ones) and use it to put a very small piece of gauze that had been in alcohol inbetween the skin and nail the best i could. This would keep the nail from growing into the skin and alittle out of the way each day. I always covered the toe with gauze to keep sweat off of it because moisture seemed to make it worse.

It took about 3 weeks but it worked, and i havent really had any problem since. Hope this helps in the future or to anyone else.
