Does anyone ever actually save a LOT before moving out?

I'm thinking I'm living in a situation where old, antiquated values are being disseminated and I'm being forced to follow them at the expense of my happiness. Let me explain.

I moved home awhile ago to pay off some credit cards and get out of debt, which I have done successfully. I'm saving to move out but, even though I have saved well over enough for first months' rent, deposit, moving expenses, setting up of utilities, and other misc. expenses, I'm told by ze parents that I don't have enough and I have to save 2x monthly rent as backup. Is this even realistic?

Does ANYONE ever save beyond the minimum anymore? I'm tired of living at home (have only lived in a couple apartments on my own during about 2-3 years of my total adult life) and would love to be out on my own again.

I have no doubt I would do well and flourish on my own but I'm thinking that this saving for a few more months will set me back and cause me to miss out on some opportunities (relationships, apartments, that type of thing).

Any thoughts? Does anyone ever ever save that much backup before moving anymore?

I definitely didn't. I truly believe it depends on the family relationship, and on the adult child's relationship with his parents and siblings. For example, my boyfriend's best friend has the luxury of investing in stocks, buying a new car, and paying debt from student loans- while living rent-free under his parents' roof. They respect him as an adult, and they have cultivated an interdependent relationship. I, on the other hand, would never consider moving back in to save for an emergency fund unless I was completely desperate. My authoritarian parents stick to the motto, "My house, my rules", even if the adult is paying rent and contributing financially. Basically, if the stress of remaining at home does not outweighs the unpredictability of being independent, I say stay there and save!
