are there any advantages health wise? and reproductive positives?

Real food is always better then supplements. Protein drink are just that supplement, they are primarlly for convenience and will generally cost you more then better sources like eggs, tuna, cottage cheese. But they are convenient.

It should only be used as a supplement. Personally, I like to take one right after I work out. Even then however, I still go and eat wholesome foods not too long after.

But protein shakes are a great way to make sure you're reaching your daily amount of protein intake. However, it should only make up a small percentage of your daily requirements.

What do you mean by reproductive positives? If you mean fertility benefits, none that I know of.

Mostly convenience. As noted a healthy diet of normal food is the best way to get all of your protein. However I usually have one in the morning - since I have mostly stopped eating meat it helps me reach a good daily protein intake. Plus I don't have much of an appetite when I first wake up, but know that it's important to eat in the mornings. Chocolate shakes with some coffee thrown in taste great and are easy to eat even when I'm not that hungry.

I disagree that they are more expensive. Turkey, salmon, lean beef, and many other protein rich foods are all more expensive than protein shakes (assuming you buy the powder, not premade).

True. I'd rather eat real food than a supplement though. Tastes better too :)

Quoted for truth. Well done.

The only time I'll drink a protein shake is immediately after a workout...

According to my dietitian, I should have protein first in the morning to get my metabolism in gear to burn the carbs to follow. Since most breakfasts that don't involve eggs or steak are chintzy on the protein, I have a couple of scoops of bland unflavored whey or soy protein with just enough fluid to make it drinkable before my cereal or oat-nut toast with p-b & j. It might be gaggy to some but I do it without the sugar or artificial sweeteners because she says so. PS: I don't buy into those sugar shakes and meal replacement pleasure fast stuff. They only give you a paltry few grams of protein and a single ounce of protein is 28 grams. It's better to have a chiken breast or turkey leg.

Looks like the above people have covered the advantages in workouts.

However, they're also good for losing weight as a meal replacement.

Just make sure when buying that you get low carbs. Some of them are sneaky with the sugar.

This isn't entirely true, they do cost more, they are more convenience, but you don't have to have "real food" pills, and liquid baby lol.

Supplements cost more? Huh? Maybe if you buy the pre-mixed stuff...

The one I buy works out at 30p per drink, that is less than half a tin of tuna, less than 3 eggs, less than 1/3 of a chicken breast, and half the price of 250g cottage cheese. It tastes really nice too, chocolate flavour, I mix it with ice, a spoon of instant coffee and milk, and blend until frothy. Just like a chocolate milkshake. Yum!

But yes it's just a supplement, I get most of my protein from real food.

I heard on public radio that Soy isn't good for men at all...

I worked at a natural health store and they beat this into my brain. Soy is great for you in small doses but Americans (as usual) get a hold of a fad and claim it as gospel. From what I understand excessive soy causes testosterone to fall and can result in man boobies. I've heard it enough that I only use whey. And like a lot of others have already dais only as a supplement when working out extra hard

I was taking 3 Whey protien shakes a day then dropped down to one immediatly after a workout & added low fat cottage cheese with berries (casin protien) & I started looseing more weight while still maintaining strength.

Hahaha ya done good.

However, I will add that sometimes it's very difficult to get the amount of protein one (such as myself) might need in a day on "real" foods alone. It's pretty easy to chug 56 grams of protein in a shake :D

they are good for a low carb diet. i lost 70 pounds over the last year using protein supps.

i have never had a taste for meat. I guess that I should say "healthy" meat, so I rely on protein supps more than most people here. I usually have 2 a day, which is roughly 100 grams of protein and 600 or so calories, and I always use non-fat milk. there are very few brands that taste good with water.

Nuts and PB are my favorite source for protein and 'dem good fats.

Protein expensive? Man you guys need to start shopping at bulk food stores, I go grocery shopping for about a month and a half's worth of food at a time, it's cheaper that way. Buy 20 lb tubes of hamburger (which is more than 2-3 months worth for me easily) for 30-40 bucks. I spend maybe 100 dollars on food a month (seeing that I normally spend 130-160 for a month and a half of food) and I have some form of meat with lunch and dinner everyday.

Then again it helps when you don't eat very much anyway, and are a good enough cook that you can get alot of different flavors out of the same ingredients so you don't get bored with what you're eating.

no. Just more convenient to use when your time is limited.

Be careful though, consumer reports released an article with 15 popular protein drinks containing excessive heavy metals.

Protein drinks do not contribute to a well-balanced diet. They contain protein, but little else. Like other types of junk food, protein drinks are calorie-dense and nutrition-poor. The proteins easiest for humans to digest come from plants and are found in a wide variety of foods- most noticeably nuts, beans and legumes.

you have no clue what you are taking about.

protein supps are not junk food. and they don't contain anything other than protein because they are PROTEIN supps not meal replacements.

whey protein is the easiest protein to digest and it comes from milk. Whey proteins have a Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) of 1.14. The reported score is 1.0, which is the maximum value allowed by the USDA for reporting purposes. In other words, the digestibility of whey is off the scale.

This is crap. Just like On Edge said, whey protein is one of the most biologically available pure sources of protein around.

Yeah, but when I use meal replacement shakes, I also include a half serving of whey protein. I also like to make fruit smoothies and I will use whey in them too sometimes. Between that, the greek yogurt for lunch and a PB snack, I probably go overboard slightly with the protein intake, but I only eat meat a few times a week.

I love my protein shakes. Your body needs certain amounts of certain various things. If you can't meet these requirements through your daily diet, what is wrong with supplements?
