Help, Spanish translation for letter

Recommended Posts

There is this Mexican guy at my work who I’ve caught making sarcastic remarks to some girls I work with who are also Mexican. We have all been friends on the job for over 2 years but I have always felt a hostile feeling from him when I would joke around with the girls. Anyway he has turned them against me and there is not much I can do because the girls speak broken English. It's a long story but I know he is saying $hit to them.

Anyway, I would like to type up a short letter in spanish to the girls just explaining that I care for them as friends and that it has hurt me the way they have all singled me out. Doses anyone know of a good site or program that doses an accurate job in translating a letter? Or would someone mind doing this for me please?

I mean it’s terrible, these two girls and this guy mess with my head so bad I know I don't deserve this but in the place where I work you kind of have to get along when we do things in groups.

Anyway, about 10 min's before it was time to go home they all gave each other hugs in front of me and didn’t even say good by to me. I mean all day they were nice and we all joked, it's almost like a game they have decided to play.

I’ve done so many favors for these people: like I’ve brought this guy's computer home and fixed it twice, give him a $400 dollor set of new speakers for only $20 bucks and I use to bring in homemade pies for everyone at work like twice a month.

Is it because I’m not Mexican that I’m out of the circle so fast?

I was so close with this guy and this girl until this new girl started and it’s like they don’t need me anymore. It’s like they have turned on me over night. I think he is puting stuff in the two girl's heads, this guy is very cleaver I will give him that.

By the way both girls use to hit on me all the time now they play mind games and are very cold toward me. I HATE MEAN PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, I just tried that translation link but it seems to totally alter the letter because when I tried to convert the Spanish it created back to English the letter was almost unreadable.

Yeah, literal translations don't always work. I didn't know it was gonna be that long. I'll see what I can do for you, chief.

I’m thinking maybe I should just let it go and pass on this for now. I’m thinking it might freak her out or put her on the spot. They were being a lot nicer today. Maybe I underestimated their intelligence and they really do know what’s going on. It is what it is I guess.

There's nothing in the letter that I wrote that I wouldn't feel comfortable saying to someone, but I dumbed it down a bit, made it more declarative and less colloquial.

Thanks RobertoPNW, I think your right!

And thanks dyermaker! By the way what doses declarative and less colloquial mean?

I meant I made it more of a statement, not a conversation. Your letter had things like "well" "just" "simply" etc., and while easy reading in English, it doesn't translate well.

Hay by the way dyermaker, I know this is a little off topic but:

Check out these game shots. This is a game I play called Operation Flash Point.

http://mgiese1.home.comcast.net/ofp.htm

The islands are so big you can drive forever on them. Also, you can get in any vehicle or plain, Jet, choper and fly and shoot it. There are thousands of add-ons you can dowload, vehicls, guns.

Check these shots.

Make sure your screen rez is at (1024 X 768) 24 or 32bit color depth.

No but you can get the GOTY version for about $40 bucks which comes with all three CD’s, it's the full version! The other two Cd’s that come in the box are basically extensions upgrades but you get it all in the box!

About 8 years ago the government used operation flash point to train our military and later they turned it into a game. I’ve played lots of games and believe me when I tell you this game is no joke. It takes a $hit load of power to run but the special effects are amazing. I build computer systems and I built my system just for this game.

Because of the life like size and scale you really feel like you’re on the combat grounds, you can see tanks coming at you from way out in the distance firing at you. Everything is real. For example when you shot guns in this game the bullets actually drop over distance like in real life. Also depending on how far you are from something that is blowing up, you see the light before you hear the sound. There are also amazing special effects like smoke under the tank treds and you can see the diesel fuel from the tank engines. The editor is killer! you can make your own missions, its' endless I can go on all day.

By the way, here are some shots of a level I built for a game called Unreal when I was out of work. :p I worked on this 3 story building for about 8 months. You can actual walk around this building, it’s huge.

Interesting, I just went to Babelfish and typed in (You are beautiful in side and out)

And I got back

Usted es en lado y hacia fuera hermoso

Which means

(You are in side and towards outside beautiful)

--

Is this really the way someone who speaks spansh sees this sentence? I mean if I were to say to a girl You are beautiful in side and out, would it be proper for me to say it in spanish as (You are in side and towards outside beautiful) ? this is crazy

Well for one thing, in english the word is "inside", not in side.

Usted is formal, you would use tU for you to someone you know, a peer.

Also, you would say a beautiful beach is a "playa hermosa", but not a beautiful girl, that's not hermosa (and certainly not hermoso! That's a good lookin man), I'd use "guapa".

In conversational spanish, if I was telling a girl she's beautiful inside and out, I would say : "Eres guapa, adentro y fuera."

Lol, Man you guys don’t sleep either :p

Ya good thing I asked. That’s whats hard about learning a language is that it’s not just the words you have to learn but how to construct them. I’m using a program called Learn to Speak Spanish it seems good but I just started. I also have something called English-Spanish Interpreter Professional 4.0 but I guess the new 4.10 has a newer engine and is easer to understand. Anyway thanks guys and a huge thanks dyermaker for retyping my letter!

I better go to bed now! Talk to you dudes tomorrow!

hablo Tex-Mex ... I'd screw up ALL your conversations because of the mish-mash of words

Who's that guy always talking about dick lay?

that's our little Dave 1234. Him translating stuff into an actual foreign language would be scary, indeed ....

begins to wonder, "IS there a literal translation for 'dicklay'?"

guapa? I thought 'bonita' would be a less formal term to use, but then again, neither of those would ascend to the meaning of "beautiful," would they?

the closest spanish I know is "hoochie mama" LOL! :)

Um, as for the original post -- check with your human resources department or representative. There are laws and guidelines about respect and harrassment in the workplace, and maintaining a safe and comfortable working atmosphere. If you are feeling uncomfortable or threatened or ridiculed at work there may be some things that you can do about it. You sure should not have to tolerate it. There is no law against speaking different languages, but if you are supposed to be a team then its only respectfull to communicate in a language that you all understand. I've been in a situation where several spanish speaking people were asked by HR to refrain from speaking in spanish during the work day because it was counter-productive to the team and it did make the rest of us feel a little paranoid.

If you are in an industry where there is not a common language then you might want to see about a transfer to a different department or team. It's more than just the language difference, its the way they are treating you and it almost sounds like harrassment.

I wouldn't call a human bonita, La chica guapa vive en la casa bonita (The pretty girl lives in the pretty house)--But I'm not 100% sure.
