Should I be worried that I rarely have my period? A couple of years ago, during a regular check up, I mentioned to my doctor that I don't get my period often (maybe 3 or 4 times in a whole year or even less), and she didn't seem worried. She said some women just don't get their periods, but that in the future it may be a problem if I want to get pregnant.

Should I get a second opinion? I don't think I'm underweight. I'm about 105 pounds, but I'm 5 feet 4 inches. My sister is just a few pounds heavier than me, and she's only slightly shorter than me, and she never misses her period.

Hi Little Bird, do you mind me asking how old you are? Lots of people take years to establish a regular cycle and that is perfectly normal.

I'm 26. In a way it's nice to not have my period, but it does make me wonder if there's something wrong with my hormones. Also, it's been like this since my first period at 14.

I was a late bloomer and didn't get my period until I was 15. Mine is irregular as well.

I think you should see another doctor to get a different opinion. I heard doctors usually recommend going on the pill to help with periods??

Yah I think you should get a second opinion. When I had irregular periods as a teenager (opposite of you, my periods wouldn't stop) the dr got me to have an ultrasound and found cysts in my ovaries. Imagine if you also had something serious and you didn't find out until it was too late because the dr was too relaxed about the issue. Get checked out by someone else to be on the safe side.

Btw are you on the pill? I am on the pill but my periods are still irregular despite it.

I would get a second opinion.

Do you exercise a lot? It could be anything, from your body fat and weight being too low to hormonal problems to polycystic ovary syndrome to something even more serious. Whether it's a serious problem will depend on the cause, and only a doctor can figure that out for you.

I'm not on the pill. I rarely exercise, unless you count the 10-15 min walk to the train station I take everyday to get to work. Maybe it's because I'm thin, but like I said, my sister is maybe 5 pounds heavier than me and only about an inch or two shorter than me and she is regular.

When I do get my period, it's super heavy, as if making up for the lack of regularity.

it could be because you are a little under weight, but it can be a host of different things like endometriosis or PCOS or some other hormonal imbalance.

i suggest you get a different opinion- you might be surprised how doctors differ in their knowledge of health related afflictions- Good Luck!

I agree with everyone suggesting consulting a doctor. It could be nothing significant and just the way you are (I have heard of people having children who had never had a period at all!) it could also be something medical which can be treated.

Even if you don't want a family now, you may in the future and getting it checked out helps keep your options open. I am similar in age and can empathise totally with your symptoms. I was diagnosed with endometriosis about 4 years ago.

Best wishes, I hope you get things sorted soon.
