Are kids growing up to quick anymore

my question to you is this are our kids growing up to darn quickly now a days and in turn losing out on their childhood to some extent? This has been on my mind for a while. But I guess what made me post is I just watched the video link in D-lishes thread of a 13 year old Justin beeber prancing around confessing how he "needs somebody to love" really at 13?

Gee when I was 13 I only needed my cartoons and a Pb&J sandwich and maybe a few good video games! I'm only 32 mind you. Perhaps I was slow to mature I dunno but you get the point.

At 13 they have no idea what "love" is and should be getting the bulk of said love from their family unit still no? Maybe its a sad commentary on the demise of family's that kids need to look else wheres for "love" what ever happed to just being a kid and doing kid things?

Heck I didn't even fully and truly understand what real love was until my late 20s and I'm still learning but looking back I'm glad at least that I enjoyed my time as a kid and didn't push myself to become a adult to fast as seams to be the norm now..

Justin Bieber is not an example of growing up to fast. He is an example of horrible music. I know preteen girls have awful taste in music but this is just really really bad. People actually like this?

Agreed it made my ears bleed but that said replace him with any other teeny bop idol and you get the same mix. Or even just kids in general now a days having sex at 12 and 13 and even younger when they clearly can't grasp the meaning of sex or other adult things...

kids have been growing up to fast since the liberal 60s. it was cool to call your folks by their first names, and be hip and independent, since then kids have been wearing adult style clothes and acting like adults because adults thought it was a good thing to be liberal., when u get 13 yr old girls getting pregnant and boys of 11 being convicted of rape then yeah i think we can safely say their being plunged into an adult world way too fast, but it not their fault, society is supposedly under the control of adults, what kind of crap are we exposing kids to if this kind of thing happens to them?

Teenage musicians singing about love isn't really new - Frankie Lymon was 13 when he sang "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" in 1956, Michael Jackson was also around that age when he started his solo career, etc. So while I think kids grow up faster now than they used to, I don't think teen pop stars singing about love is a good indicator of that trend.

It's nothing new. A lot of those old girl groups and love songs from the early 60s were actually sung by teenagers.

I dabble in another message board from time to time and there was a young girl who was 13 and had a pregnancy scare. Because she was fooling around with her bf and he fingered her no sex just heavy petting.

She was terrified that she was pregnant from it and then after a few posters reassured her she wouldn't have been. She then went on to proclaim how mature she is and how she feels "shes ready for sex"

Honestly my mouth hit the floor I bit my tong and left the thread its just so sad to me..

This is from a lack of parental guidance. We have a lot of parents today who do not know how to properly raise the next generation.

Agreed you bring up some good points...

Well yes and no I think the media dose affect how kids act now more then ever in this super digital age. I think a good example of that is the surge in the hip hop culture. Kids tune in and buy into allot of what is handed out to them. And in turn big business bank on that literally but even that aside the trend still stands

today? this all began in the usa in the liberal 60s Turn on tune in drop out, timothy leary set off a culture with those words that set a downward spiral in social responsibility, and is now running at such breakneck speed the adults of today who were kids yesterday, have no idea how to put the brakes on.

kids are crap today, blame the kids of yesterday.

I think you hit the nail on the head how ever I'm sure there are tons of parents who would disagree and blame it on the kids. And how hard it is to raise them now a days have kids really gotten worse?

I think a lot of it is that people are more open about these things, and it's all more visible. I'm sure there were 13 year olds having sex in the 70s despite not being prepared and not knowing what they were doing, but they weren't posting about it on message boards, Facebook, and MySpace. They were talking about it with their friends, if they talked about it at all, so it wasn't readily apparent or visible. Teen pregnancy rates have actually declined significantly since the 1950s, although the proportion of teen pregnancies that happen outside of wedlock have gone up.

I suppose your right and with each new failed generation we sink just that much more lower into the mud..

Gawd I'm going to be such a hard azz mother some day but you almost NEED to be to help them learn how to be a decent human being in all this primordial muck the worlds in...

Teen includes legal adults (ie, 18-19, in the US), and in the 50s, it wasn't uncommon for teenagers to get married. It was also much more common for families to pressure/force pregnant teens to get married, but shotgun weddings aren't as common anymore. Here's a source: http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/tgr/05/1/gr050107.html

This is also interesting: http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/FB-ATSRH.html

To me at 18 and 19 your basically an adult sure you still need guidance but should be free to make the bulk of your decisions on your own. If I had a 18 or 19 year old come to me and want to marry I would give it my blessing.

LONG AS it was coming from a already stable loving relationship 1st. Same with pregnancy what I have issues with is the tweens acting like adults. To me if there old enough to go to war there old enough to do other adult activities with my guidance of course..

During the 1990s, teenage pregnancy rates and birthrates declined to record low levels. Even with this progress, however, the U.S. teen birthrate is one of the highest in the developed world.

so what did u mean by

Teen pregnancy rates have actually declined significantly since the 1950s,

its still bad tho, heh....?

the other link isnt interesting its tragic, these kids are barely out of diapers and their putting them on their own babies.

Um, I meant exactly what I wrote. That teen pregnancy rates [in the US] have declined significantly since the 1950s.

I didn't write "teen pregnancy rates in the US are among the lowest in the world."

I don't understand the confusion.

Point of correction, Justin Bieber is currently 16. Not saying this changes the premise of this valuable discussion, but there's a pretty big difference between 13 and 16, if that was truly the basis of your concern. I do acknowledge that 13 year-old girls are a substantial part of his fan base, but that's little different from how it's been in pop music for a half a century now...

Secondly, I hope you're not posting this from your childhood bedroom, having moved back in with your parents... ;)

And I'm not saying that I disagree with your premise, but along those lines, I read an interesting article.. To avoid the tricky rules regarding post links, I'll suggest that you go to Google News, and search for "What is it about 20-somethings" (including the quotation marks) for an article in the NY Times.

Food for thought: perhaps kids are accelerating too fast through childhood and adolescence, then slowing down and loitering through their 20's....

Final thought: for at least the last half century, society has wrung its collective hands over the fact that "this generation's kids" are incorrigible, and has engaged in debates over whether it's the kids, the parenting, etc... I think it's an easy toss-off line (and usually thrown out by non-parents) to say "it's bad parenting", when each generation of kids is growing up in a world VERY different from the previous one, and each generation of parents is parenting in a VERY different world than they saw their parents operating within. There have always been some "bad parents" but most of them ("us," yes, I'll admit I'm speaking first person here) care deeply about giving our kids the best path to being productive, moreal, independent people, and are doing the best we can with what we've got.

Ok my correction I herd he was 13 some weres and he looks the part still tho as you say it doesn't change his fan base of zillions of 11/12/13 and younger girls. Who are listing to a guy who prob hasn't seriousely hit puberity yet sing about how he "needs some one to love" I just found that off putting coming from some one who looks like he could be in the mickey mouse club I guess.

Anyways that aside I was mainley just useing beiber as a jumping off point for the matter as a hole. As others have said young people have been singing about "love" for generatons but then again there is a differance to singing about puppy "love" and singing about how fine a girls ass is and how they want to Ahem "sex her up" I know its a stretch but work with me here. Seams to me the music of yesterday had way diffrent intent hope that came out the right way.

Now lastly I assure you I'm not in my mothers basement or my old room I can only long for those simpler days na I've been out of the house since I was 20 lol..

Oh this part well yea the same debate has been going but again to what degree there is a difference to my kids maybe don't do that great in school there only getting a C and naughty Timmy was caut after he broke the nabors window playing baseball kinda bad kids.

And then we have the ones who are hooked on drugs pregnant at 12 and alcoholics at 16 in jail by 18 kinda bad kids! Theres a def noticeable difference and you can't help but wonder when the probs are so sever if it is a total break down of parenting skills at work? Witch then leads to a family break down as a hole..

i guess that it doesnt matter what the figure, even one teenage pregnancy is a bad thing, so to have the highest level in the world is pretty damning, even if rates have dropped, it think were letting kids down.
