Men + scooters = ?

So I've been thinking about buying a scooter. I don't really need one, but I live in an urban area and it would make grocery trips and odd errands a little easier. Plus, I think it'd be fun to zip around the city with a lady friend sitting behind me.

What would the women here think about a man who rides a scooter? And for the men, would you ride one? Why or why not? I'm sure some of you have dated people with scooters. Stories?

Seems like there's a big perception in the U.S. that scooters are effeminate. For example, there's this article from AskMen.com. The readers' comments are about what I'd expect. Of course, they also selected one of the most feminine looking scooters possible, as opposed to something like a Honda PCX.

I'm not actually trying to solicit advice, but mainly just curious what others' perspectives are.

Just learning how to ride a "motorcycle" - I learned on my step mother's sport scooter and always felt a little self conscious about what other people were assuming about me.

I think its retarded and mostly didn't care but I am aware of how other people, especially men, think about it. Actually - I'm not really sure what women think about it...

I think scooters possibly have a different image in the UK, I'm thinking Mod boys in Crombie coats whizzing around on a Lambretta, I'm thinking most yummy indeed!!

My views of scooters are the same as fat chicks. They're a lot of fun but you wouldn't want your friends seeing you with them.

I would ride a scooter, though I prefer motorcycles.

But I've always never really cared what other people thought about me in most ways, how I thought of myself was always more important.

For example I like playing airguitar and headbanging along with my music, if you think thats 'goofy' then I don't really care because I enjoy it. And yet if I don't like something about me, let's just say my haircut for example (not really) if I don't like it, and somebody makes fun of it I feel ALOT worse for it, while it somebody made fun of me playing air guitar in public I wouldn't let it bother me.

My best friend has a Vespa and I think he's pretty bad ass on one. If anyone would question the girliness of a scooter, he would simply comment that when he lived as a journalist in Phnom Penh Cambodia, everybody drove motos (mopeds) because people were poor & the city was so crowded. I don't think he worries about being girlie considering he has been in a lot of war torn parts of the world.

As a scared girl, I would never step foot on a motorcycle, but I love shuttling on the back of his Vespa.

Just some food for thought.

Yeah, I think I feel similarly. If I end up not buying one it'll be because it doesn't make sense for a practical reason, not because someone on the Internet said I'd look ridiculous.

I think a lot of the perception depends on your social circle. I'm an academic, so I don't really run into the biker girl type who would take one look at me and laugh. Nor would I have anything in common with her. And I guess from a stereotypical American macho-male point of view, drinking white wine and cooking are both effeminate.

Depends on the demograph. Where I live is a sub city/rural area and you'd get laughed at a bit riding one...then again I drive a supped up tokyo drift styled MX5 (or miata for you U.S people) and that's equal to a scooter when comparing it to a Ford or Holden. But in the city (Melbourne) yeah you see them a bit and they really suit the funky kind of look. I really do like them but then again I traded in an engagement ring for a motorbike (ZZR250). ;P

I got it from Terry James from the Lex and Terry Radio Show. And I believe in it whole heartedly.

Oh c'mon. This is an inside joke almost unanamously known by men. The punch line was just left out.

I just found another amusing blog post about this topic. One of several funny sections quoted:

Finally: How does one maintain his masculinity while riding such a tiny and seemingly effeminate vehicle? I find this really interesting. In Europe and most of the third world scooters are THE mode of transportation. But in hypermasculine America, with its numerous phallic symbols and miles of highway scooters are frowned upon—especially by young males who are often uncomfortable in their sexuality and feel the need to terrorize males scooter riders who are more in-touch and comfortable with their heterosexuality. In other words, punk mutha****as like to talk **** about real men who ride scooters.

In the US... no, lol.. ride a real motorcycle, maybe start off on a 500cc ... scooters are gay.. .just look at every that rides a scooter in South Beach, lol... Unless you are on vacation and are just renting one to cruise around, NOT a good idea for daily transportation.. Then again, if it's convenient, and you don't care what anyone thinks of you, AND you have alternate transportation, just get it... just don't go to the gym on the scooter, lol... guys are gonna think you are gay, lol

I drive a motorcycle so honestly, despite how illogical it is, I couldn't take a man seriously who had a scooter. I do think it's great that they are getting more popular though.

Just get a new Ninja 250 (08 or later). They look amazing, get great gas mileage (I get 70-80 mpg), have much more power and are more fun than a scooter. Plus you'll actually look good on it.

Scooters scare me too, because I'd feel like I didn't have enough power to get out of the way if something happened. Maybe that's a biased perception, though.
