I know my friend has a crush on this girl as do I, but I know he will never do anything about it(due to being too shy and no time because of studies). I really want to ask this girl out. May be she doesn't love both. - In case you also continute to love her. I think your should approach her by: + First: you can borrow the notebook, this reason is so legitimate. + Second: follow her if you have some chance to talk to her to know how does she think of you. If you totally know she love you to. Please come and tell her your thinking. On the contrary, she doesn't love, please see her as a friend. Good luck.
