My parents are WACKOS

My parents are driving me insane! I'm 20 years old and I just recently moved back home after failing to make it out on my own. I had a drug problem that I have overcome, but they never found out about that. Anyways, my parents feel that since I moved back in they have the right to tell me how to live my life.

I realize that I live under their roof once again, but I don't want to feel smothered and babied by them. They treat me like a child and I hate it. I told them that I wanted to get a degree in Journalism to back up my work as a free lance writer, but they said that I should try something easier.

They never tell me that I can do whatever I put my mind to. They never seem to understand that I'm trying to grow up and get past all the mistakes I've made. Does anyone have any advice for me on this?

just let it wash over you and go about achieving your goals. Sometimes, I think it's hard for parents of adult children to let those kids be grown up because they still want to protect them from the big bad world. Until you actually have accomplished what you set out to do, you're going to have a hard time getting your folks to accept/understand you as an adult in your own right, so just hang in there and don't take it personally when they smother you that way.

There is nothing insane about parents caring and worrying about their children. I am 30 years old and my mom gives me all kinds of advice on how I should live my life. Hell, she even asks me if I'm eating my vegetables! No matter how old you are, you are always gonna be their baby. So, naturally, they are gonna worry. It's hardcoded into a parents genes. Nothing wacko about that!
