befuddled11
Hey there, To make a long story short, I'm upgrading my anti-virus software (Norton) because I did a scan on PCPitstop and found 3 viruses on my PC (keylogger, etc). Yes, I'm an idiot for not having upgraded it sooner. I want to get the Rebate for upgrading, but in order to do so, I have to provide PROOF that I originally downloaded (bought) it, way back in either 99 or 2000 (I think I last upgraded it in 2000). I certainly don't keep emails from 2000, so don't have any proof-email from back then, confirming I upgraded, or the original one indicating when I ordered it online/downloaded it. It's a nice little rebate I could get back. Obviously I couldn't "upgrade" if I hadn't already purchased it but they are strict about this. Is there any file in my Norton folder that would SHOW the date that I originally purchased it? I found a floppy disk in my desk, that I wrote on it "Norton Antivirus Program Disk"..... Anybody have any suggestions? I can't call up the Customer Service line to ask, as they're closed today. Thanks
Arabess
You should be able to right click on the Norton icon on your desktop....click properties and there will be a created and modified date. Printing that screen should be proof enough.
yes
if you don't have a desktop icon for it, find the folder where it's installed and check the properties of any of the files using right click->properties. look at the date. let us know if you find it! -yes
Vivid_29
If it doesn't work, I know a couple of websites you can go to where you can download the most recent pirated antivirus software. Let me know and I'll PM you. ~V
dyermaker
Antivirus software is one of the few things that shouldn't be pirated. AV software requires constant updating, to stay protected. Outdated virus definitions make your AV protection worthless. You need some sort of weekly automated download of definition files, which requires a legal copy of the software. Darkangelism
That might not work, because they can claim you pirated it back then and did not legally buy it. That is the best thing to try, but depending on the store and who is working there they might accept a printout of the screen with a picture of the modifried to created date. Use the prtScreen button to print the screen, but this doesnt work with all printers, if it doesnt then hold shift and press print screen, this will copy the screen to the clipboard, then open a graphics program(paint, photoshop) and go to edit-> paste and the image will show up then print that file. Even though it's pirated, can't you still update, if you have the product key? ~V
Darkangelism
You can download the updates, but the norton updates run out after a year and if you pirated you can't go get a new upgrade version and have to buy the whole install package. I just started to use a free virus scan that I find to work better then Norton's anyway PM me for details if you want.
Arabess
I use the Norton Professional Anti Virus. More than just updating it, which I do sometimes daily, it also has a wonderful system check program on there which saves me LOTS of time and headache. What I'm not particularly happy with is this free Ad-aware 6.0 I downloaded from PC World. If there is a better online version to download....that would be cool to know. If it's pirated, you're not the only one using the product key, and it's a terrible idea to (unaviodably) send computer and personal data to a company whom you just stole stuff from, since they'd figure that out. It's just like how we don't send error reports while running pirated copies of windows.
