Nice attempt at looking intelligent. I wasn't trying to misrepresent a correlation as causation. The same can't be said for a lot of people in this thread who have been either explicitly saying or implying that media and/or men's "preferences" are what's making women develop eating disorders to achieve a body type that virtually no man, not even Green, finds attractive.

You know, it is partially the media. You'd have to be an anoretic or a psychologist to truly understand, but I'll try to explain. I think the seeds were always there, if you will. I had always worried about my weight...then, two years ago, I had a bit of a nervous breakdown...after my anxiety developed, I began using food so I could feel I had some semblance of control. Oh, I thought, at least I'll be skinny. Then, it just turned into an obsessive-compulsive relationship...Now, my ED controls me. And, even though I know that I could put on a few pounds, I can't allow myself to do it.

YOU ARE AN IDIOT. It's not just about that......I starve myself to control aspects of my life that I find otherwise uncontrollable. For example, if I am worried about a grade, I will fast. That aspect of my eating disorder is totally unaffected by my appearance. So, THINK BEFORE YOU POST.

YOU ARE AN IDIOT because im not talking about people like you im talking about women who do it to live up to some image of women they see on tv or too look better then other women

I don't think I've been disrespectful to anorexia or the people who have or do have it by making this thread. I think most of the posters who acuse me of being disrespectful about eating disorders need to take a good long hard look at themselves.

No, you haven't. I get what you're saying, but it doesn't really make sense that you or you girlfriend would be upset. When people tell me to eat, I'm secretly flattered. Honestly. Anyway, it's a lot worse to be told you're too fat than to be told you're to skinny (since thin is the beauty ideal).

Wow, you have erectile dysfunction and anorexia?

Maybe you could start putting Viagras in your milk shakes or something.

Not better looking – thinner!

But yes, women often compare themselves to other women. I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone

No it sounded to me like the article meant when they look at women with better bodies (ie thinner it made them nervouse) really who cares. You can't change the world you see as long as you are willing to look at whats there.

You don’t need to change the world – the world is fine.

The said research suggests that the media don’t represent an accurate cross section of the real world and is over populated with stick thin women.

And thinner is not necessarily better or healthier.

I definitely agree that you don’t have to watch, although it is not as simple as it sounds, particularly for young women. Besides, some influences are not even at a conscious level.
