anon
My brother hasn't had this teeth professinally cleaned in years and is procrastinating going now. I suspect it's because he fears the comments by the dentist on his dental state. I'm considering cleaning his teeth a bit with a scaler you can buy in drugstores or on the internet, at least enough so he won't be embarrased to see a dentist. Would this be risky? Any alternate suggestions? Thank you.
Darkangelism
not risky, as long as you dont stab him in the gums with it you are fine.
BlockHead
Try not to rip-out his fillings. Tender gums are not a good. Sore spots on his teeth are not good. Accidentally yanking out a tooth is not good. You should keep an eye out for bleeding especially if you didn’t poke there.
moimeme
Problem is they aren't designed properly. I went to a school clinic for my last cleaning, which took place over six visits and fourteen hours! It wasn't that I was a mess, but the student has to go veeeeerrrryyyyyyy slllooowwwlllyy LOL. I learned a lot about the whole process, including the differences between all the tools they use. Why not suggest he go to a clinic? People who do scaling at clinics see a LOT of people who can't afford dentist visits so let themselves get very messed up. The clinic staff won't scold him, they'll just explain to him how important it is to get it done frequently. At least, according to the lass who worked with me. If he badly wants to get rid of some, he should try to do it himself. You could cause an infection or worse if you damage his gums because the store-bought tool slips. dyermaker
Look into sedation dentistry, it's painless, and they specialize in people who haven't been to the dentist in like a gaquillion years.
Iamhappy
Oh, my goodness, please don't!! Unless you have experience in dentistry, please leave it to the professionals. Gums can get easily infected, nerves poked and irritated, etc. This will will cause more problems than it will solve. I'm surrounded by a lot of do-it-yourself type people. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. Just one example, I have a friend who decided to whiten his teeth with professional strength dental peroxide (except without the aid of a professional). Everything seemed ok, until the day he passed out. It turns out he'd been slowly poisoning himself - too much peroxide in his blood.

Where would I look this up, or do dental offices give referrals? Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
