Lorelai
Holiday OT has started for me -- won't be over until at least January, and then possibly after that when rollouts start we might have even more than we do now. The money is great, but it's cutting into my time to prepare my usual meals. I usually can choose either to exercise or cook, but don't have time for both every day anymore. And I don't think skipping on exercise is the answer. I'd been going by the Weight Watchers points system, and have done well -- not losing weight extremely fast, but steadily at least a pound a week (down from two pounds a week during the first two months, but that's to be expected I've heard). For the last two weeks I've been eating frozen diet meals just because it's more convenient -- but looking at how much more it's costing me to do prepackaged, it looks like I would spend as much at the grocery store as I would to do a plan like Nutrisystem, where the food is pre-packaged and delivered... which would save me even more time by making grocery store trips shorter (you still have to get fresh fruits and vegetables, but it's faster to drop in to the produce section than it is to cruise all the aisles). I don't think this will be a long-term thing for me, just to get me through this time where I'm averaging a 55 hour work week. But I was curious before I committed to a month of trying this about other people's experiences. Anybody tried it? Horror stories? Glowing reviews? Words of advice?
just_some_guy
My wife did Nutrasystem. She lost a little weight on it, when she stuck with it. But wound up happening is she'd order the food, then it would sit on the shelf and I'd wind up eating it. Some of it is ok. Oddly enough, I really like the freeze-dried hamburger patties. Some of the food is nasty. All of the sweets are made from weird sugar alcohols, which taste a bit weird and produce prodigious flatulence. It will work if you stick with the diet. If you don't, then all you'll be doing is spending money on shelf-stable microwave food.

If one item is so revolting I refuse to even consider opening the others like it, it looks like I can exchange stuff if I do it quickly. And I don't have any moral objections to adding lemon pepper, garlic, etc if something is simply bland. (I have a feeling I'd be adding a lot of garlic to freeze-dried burgers, I generally cook regular hamburger with onion and garlic anyway.) What made me decide to get the frozen dinners was realizing I'd let good food go bad in the fridge because I just didn't have time to cook it. If I do this, I'll be committing to the full month, for better or worse. If I can't figure out enough stuff they sell that I like in a month's time, I'll go back to the WW thing -- and unless the food is truly spectacular, I fully expect to go back to it once I have time to actually cook again. Thanks for the word of warning on the sweet stuff, by the way. Sounds like a good built-in mechanism to prevent binging on it all at once, though.... I bought some cookies with those sugar alcohols in them a few years ago when I was still in a relationship, and dude ate half of them in one sitting. He had to call in sick to work the next day.
