Butterflying
I've had a long running bout with my 52 year old mother about her inability to protect me, support me emotionally, or treat me like most loving parents treat their children. Emotionally, she has always been distant. She and I used to get along great until I was about 9 years old. Yesterday, I think I may have solved the problem. So now I'd like to have someone else's opinion. My mother loves to watch cartoons. In fact, she prefers them over any other TV shows. If she can't watch cartoons, then she will put on ear plugs and read the Bible, tuning out all the rest of the world. She reads aloud. She can not read silently. She gets angry when people correct her, for example, she thought Thanksgiving was celebrated all over the world. I had a friend from Bosnia over for dinner. That friend confirmed they don't celebrate the holiday in their country. My mom got so upset about this, we had to coax her to calm down. She didn't believe it until we went online and researched the history of Thanksgiving. We had to prove to this to her. There are other things and times were she gets really angry over seemingly small things, especially at a social gathering. She doesn't speak well. She has a very difficult time using a knife and fork (eats with her hands most of the time). And of course if you ask her to do something like place the napkin in her lap, she will get very angry--it's really not worth the battle so everyone just leaves her alone. Is this autism?? just_some_guy
Sounds like it could be, possibly Aspergers Syndrome. It is said that Asperger's diagnosis is often completely missed in females as the sociology of females tends to mask the symptoms. From what you describe, it sounds like she may have some autism spectrum disorder going on.

just_some_guy
Over the years people have concluded that she is just mean. After reading the symptoms again, I'd say it is highly likely that she is Aspergers. I have very mild Aspergers traits and know several people with diagnosed Asperger's.
