A good friend of mine has anxiety - her thoughts often go to catastrophic places on things that would never occur to me, and logic/reason don't help get her out of that mindset. (She's often convinced her husband is going to die if he gets on a plane, goes on a camping trip, goes on a bike ride, etc. Imagine now what it's like for her with an infant!) In her case, there is actually stuff going on in her brain that make it hard for her to shift out of panic mode, but with a therapist's help she has learned various coping mechanisms to get her off "the ledge" when she's having an anxiety attack.
