I have a close girlfriend of mine that recently got engaged. She is getting married next October and wants to lose 70 pounds by then. I'm not much of a health nut myself so I don't even know if that much weight in that amount of time is safe. She has a history of trying diet pills and other unhealthy methods of losing weight so another girlfriend and I offered to help out. One of our ideas was to swim laps at adult swim time at a local pool. Does anyone have any other suggestions of things she/we can do? How do I keep my friend from going back to her unhealthy ways?

The rate at which your friend looses weight can not be determined by anyone. Some people are fast loosers and other slow loosers. For me personally is impossible to loose more than one Lb per week. Maybe for her it could be easier.

Talking health wise. It is not recomended for anyone to loose more that 1 to 2 lbs a week. So at that rate it wouldn't be possible for her to loose 70 lbs by her weeding day.

Does she really need to loose 70 lbs.? or is she trying to be super thing?

If she really needs to loose this much. She should just work out at least 5 days a week doing a lot of cardio and some resistance training to tighten up. Swiming is great because it incorporates both. As fas as diet she should joint weight watchers it is a great program that encourages healthy habits.

Calories count. You can exercise 24 hrs/day but if you eat tons of calories, no weight will go. Don't go with her to fast food outlets. If you go to her place, don't take pop and chips and dip. Take veggies and low-fat dressing instead. If you go to restaurants together, all of you choose lean foods which aren't breaded or fried. Stay away from calorie-laden foods. Sadly, ice cream is one of the worst things you can eat in terms of calories per serving.

Exercise is only one piece of the puzzle. The other is portion control and avoiding calorie-laden foods. No matter what Atkins says, fats are still the culprits in terms of carrying lots of calories. You do need some fats in the diet, but make them unsaturated and eat them sparingly.
