How much red wine is too much?

Recommended Posts

For men, 3-4 units of alcohol a day.

For women, 2-3 units of alcohol a day.

More than that will start to become unhealthy. Even one drink of course, is calory dense and bad for physical fitness, but hey - you only live once!

Red wine is healthy, but how much is too much? Is one to two glasses a day acceptable or too much?

I say one glass a day doesn't hurt. Getting tipsy once a week is fine. Getting drunk once every two months is fine. Most everything edible/drinkable is fine in moderation.

3-4 glasses per day, even for a man, seems a bit much. For many, that will result in being buzzed every single day. Anything more than 2 glasses per day (on average) seems excessive to me, but I'm oversensitive about excessive drinking.

As far as benefits, it really depends on what diseases run in your family. For women, red wine in moderation is good for the heart, but along with other alcohol, increases your risk for breast cancer. So you gotta weigh what's important to you. You can get the same heart benefits from grape juice.

Actually, the standard 'maximum drinks a day' now (according to my homeland's national health guidelines, at least) is 2 units for men, 1 for women, and 0 for pregnant women. Also, there have been proven benefits, especially related to cardiovascular health, in consumption of red wine according to the abovementioned limit.

The last study I read said 2 drinks a day. I'm just not feeling that, so I have 1 drink of cheap red wine per day. Now and then I'll drink more socially. i don't like wine, it's medicine to me.
