I dated on and off a young woman who I met over ten years ago. Each of us had dated other people during off periods that lasted up to two years...not counting this last ongoing break of three years.

Their marriage was a successful second chance. Various other historical figures did likewise.

Hasn't happened to me personally, but it did happen to my mum. After twenty years of marriage to my dad she was reunited with her old love from the years leading up to, and during university. They've been together again for about nine years and tied the knot last January

 

It's rare, sure, but it's not unheard of.

My ex dumped me and then came back four or five times! Each time he broke up with me again, and the last time I told him to get lost because I was sick of being messed about and felt unable to trust or rely on him. Maybe he was serious this last time, but by that point I was just so fed up with him messing me about that I wasn't really able to commit to a proper relationship with him, so I was the one who walked away. If I had allowed it, no doubt he'd still be stringing me along. So yes, exes do sometimes come back, but that doesn't mean they want to be with you or that you want them back!
