Do I go for the interview or not?

Recommended Posts

I am 20 years old and have never been certain or a career. My passion is music and would love to make it with my band but I need something to fall back on if that doesn't happen.

I currently work in a major retail store where I serve people food, it's not a challenging job in the slightest and I am unhappy in the role. They say I have potential to progress and become a section leader, my current section leader is slowly showing me new things and skills which are needed to get this role as section leader at this retail store, but there is no guarantee that this role will come available anytime soon, I would have to wait for my current section leader to move up a rank in the store or leave for another store. I may take from 6 months to another year for this role to become available.

This new job I applied for is working in an airport, my ex worked there and always said it was such and interesting job and that I would love it. It would only be a 6 month contract then at the end of the contract they would evaluate whether you are needed permanent or not. I believe I would enjoy the role, the pay is better, the hours are all over the place from days to nights, basically I would have to be flexible as the router would change every week.

I am trying to think of my career but also follow my course of self discovery.

I never grew up having a career in mind so I have had to go out and find what I love. My long term goal is to set up my own business, to achieve this I am going to study a degree in business studies part time, I have had first hand experience of seeing what is needed for to run your own business as my dad does and he does terrible hours but loves his job.

The interview is on monday so I have to make my mind up fast.

Stay at my current job which is not challenging which I am unhappy at and hope the section leader job becomes available in time.

Hopefully nail this interview and leave to go to a job where the contract is not permanent, possibly not such good prospects for advancing, better pay, worse hours but a much more interesting job which can be challenging.

I am lucky that I don't have many bills to pay, I just have my car which I pay monthly on but I would save to make sure I can cover payments if I am not made permanent.

I think you should go to the interview, anything is better then retail!!!

Also, you said that it could be 6 months or more until you would be able to get the section leader job. If you get this job at the airport, continue to look at job postings and see if the section leader comes up again. Even though you wouldn't be an internal canidate anymore, since you have worked there and still know about the section, you would have an edge on other canidates.

I know how you feel, I'm extremely bored at my current job and waiting to hear about a manager position that has come up in my department. Prior to that I was waiting for a higher paying position to open up that never did..I waited 10 months for it come to up. So if you have another opportunity then go for it, you can always apply for the position at a later date.

It never (except in rare circumstances) hurts going to an interview. You still haven't made any final decisions at an interview. You might not even get the job and then the decision will be made for you. It's just exploring an opportunity, and you will make the final decision when/if you get an offer. If you do, you can enquire a bit further about the prospects of further work after six months, say that you're interested in long term work etc - this just shows that you're serious about the job, so it's a plus.

So nothing to lose in terms of going to the interview, IMO, and I think the more opportunities you explore, the easier it will also be for you to figure out what you really want.

Good luck :)
