xpaperxcutx
A toned tummy will require a 50-50 mix of diet and exercise. Exercise will build muscles which will burn more fat and give you ab ( dominal muscles) and a clean diet will mean your body will have a higher metabo using a combination of fat, carb, and protein for energy. xpaperxcutx
Basically, if you want to see some wash board abs, you're going to need a decent amount of muscle to cut down your body fat. So start some light weight training and build from there. If you can't find time to go to the gym do calisthenics at home. Lots of pushups, situps, and squat jumps. These are the basic exercises that will help you tone and build lean mass. You certainly don't need fancy machinery to build a toned body. tman666
You can absolutely lose weight without exercise. Any time you create a prolonged caloric deficit (taking in less calories than you're expending), you will lose weight. However, exercise does help to increase your metabolism (at least in the short term), build your aesthetic appeal, help keep you healthier, etc. Unless you have a very, very good reason to not exercise, you should be doing it. However, exercise for the specific purpose of creating a caloric deficit is not a good way to go about losing weight or maintaining a low body fat.

radiodarcy
you can - - but you won't be toned and will end up with loose skin - - or even sagging skin. also as tman666 noted exercise helps speed up your metabolism so you can burn more which means you can eat more - - which is always a good thing as far as i'm concerned.. i love to eat! i lost a total of 60 lbs with weightwatchers and exercise and have kept if off for four years. i feel great, have more energy and what's more probably eat more now than i did when i was 60 lbs heavier. Jaytb
yeah, in addition to what the other people said, if you're only dieting, then you may lose energy and feel weak (this is how it is for most people). And your muscles will get weaker and it'll be more difficult to get through the day. For me, I can go a little while without food, but after a certain amount of time (probably close to 18 hours) I get headaches from low blood sugar. So I think some combination of the two is a much better way. With enough exercise you can eat normal meals and still lose weight, and you don't lose energy (in fact you should have more amounts of energy) and exercise makes your brain secrete endorphins which are powerful pain killers so you feel good. So I guess if you really really really can't exercise, you can just diet, but if you can exercise then do it. The thing to keep in mind of course is that with enough dieting, you get really weak and actually can lose muscle mass.

Arabella
I've lost 160 lbs primarily through dieting. Yes, that's 160 lbs LOST. So, it's entirely possible. Anytime you lose large amounts of weight you're going to have some loose/sagging skin, and there's nothing you can do about it. Exercise will help but don't expect miracles. The skin will slowly "shrink" on its own, at least to a point. If you don't really want to exercise, then don't... but it's always a good idea to do so, if only for health benefits. Naturally, it can also speed up the weight loss by building muscle and speed up your metabolism, which will burn more calories and help create/maintain the caloric deficit required for weight loss. In any event, to be TONED, you will have to exercise. There's no way around that one.

Hilda4Russell
When you exercise, your body burns more calories.... Without exercise you need to cut more calories out of your diet which can be difficult and unhealthy....So while it is technically possible to lose weight with no exercise, it is impractical and hard to achieve..... avastavatar
Yes,For long-time weight loss you need to go to the root of the problem and make changes in your life and lifeguard is ideal for weight loss because it builds flexibility which prevents injury during other workouts, as well as muscle strength. Increased muscle mass burns more calories, Even while you're sitting on the couch, so you definitely want a fun way to feel the burn,Doing yoga regularly offers many benefits, including making you feel better about your body as you become stronger and more flexible,There are two main yoga techniques that can be applied when you are trying to lose weight:Bikram Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. In any event, to be TONED, you will have to exercise. There's no way around that one. Actually, very few people have truly loose or sagging skin after weight loss - what's on the back of your hand is loose skin. I've got stomach issues from "excess skin" after losing about 60 pounds 5 years back simply from cardio - and it's not truly excess skin. What it actually is is a high body fat percentage that causes that appearance. Most people when they grab their stomachs or other body parts, what they're feeling isn't the same as what's on the back of their hand. A lot of surgeons like to push tummy tucks and all of that to people who have recently lost weight. For some people, this is sometimes necessary to get rid of the appearance. For others, maintaining a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and strength training can reduce or eliminate that appearance over time. Especially if you're losing more than just a few pounds, you absolutely need strength training at the very least added to your routine, even if you don't do cardio. Because while your weight loss is going to be fat loss, it's also going to consist of muscle loss. Muscle has a nice, dense look to it...and the end result when you lose that muscle mass is that you end up lowering your metabolism (making it easier to gain weight in the future), and you sometimes create the hideous appearance of a high body fat percentage. My advice is to build up your muscle mass as much as you can.
