Woot! on saved money

Recommended Posts

Going to visit boyfriend in May. I had thought I would have to pay around $1500 for the flight. Only ended up having to pay $980.

That made both of us very happy :D

That's a right result! I would definitly be spending the saved money in my head, if you see what I mean.

Tickets prices are mad I think. My return ticket, London to Bogota, was £580. And with Lufthansa too, not some cra**y airline. I just thought, "Is that all?"

I'm happy for you, but to me it look like plane tickets are extremely expensive this year, usually you can get e ticket for the summer for about 1200-1300$ , but this year they are 1700$ right now ! I mean seriously !?!

Yay for cheap flights!!! :D And yeah airlines are trying to rip people off this year. Last year when I went to see my boyfriend I paid about 650 total for a roundtrip, but now I had to pay 550 for a one way ticket this year.

OP, great fare and safe travels. BTW, for general consumption, there are numerous fare sales right now to Asian destinations; most fares I've tracked are for travel commenced by March 31. Also, the fuel surcharge on some almost equals the base fare, leaving more room for a consolidator, TA or enterprising traveler to save even more money. As an example, BOS-NRT (Boston-Tokyo) is 685USD all-in on CO/UA, with a base fare of 302USD, for most of March with a three day minimum stay. I know a number of people flying transpacs right now for around 450.00 or less from CONUS.

I remember the last time I was in Japan, the bullet train cost more than flying to Osaka from the US. Wierd how that works. Anyway, safe travels! :)

Nice job creighton! :D

I wish we could get good deals like that. Between us we travel four times a year (NZ to UK and vice versa) at an average of £1,500 ($2,500) return. That's a lot of money just on flights!!! No wonder most of our 'date nights' are 'ice creams on the beach'.

Any tips on cheap flights for us Carhill? :D

Thanks Carhill - I appreciate you taking the time. I live up North, so London doesn't really work for us but at least I know there are deals out there worth looking for. :)

Telephone. Closest bucket shop to me is in San Francisco. Bucket shop = consolidator. They can sometimes find amazing deals. As a start, try Thomas Cook. They have offices all over the UK. You should find the local shops through print newspapers and magazines.

May is a great timing. are you coming over for the "golden week?"

sadly, even if the fares are cheaper i think my fiance and i have to save more for our visa application, wedding and all that stuff :(

though there are rough plans to meet, perhaps in vietnam or somewhere for a vacation if this takes longer.

Damn! We need to swop places. I live in Singapore, only 5hrs from Tokyo and, I need to be in Boston. I ended up forking out USD$1400 for Delta because, the SQ flights direct to JFK made it near impossible for me to make my connecting to Boston. And it's oddles more expensive of course.

You guys are lucky you don't have crappy currency value. Bf's trip to see me when we were LD was about 5000 bucks of our currency. As you can imagine, back then we didn't exactly see each other very often.

OP: Awesome! :)

Not sure. I'm arriving on April 30th (Saturday). Luckily, boyfriend already has his paperwork in order for the remainder of his stay and I just need a tourist Visa. I'll be there for 1 week, most of it in Tokyo.

If you're a US citizen, a tourist visa is not required for stays of less than 90 days.

I've been to Japan a number times, most recently last year, and no visa was required. They do attach a cute little paper thingie to your passport page.

The one thing I remember from the first time was how lost I was with the signage at Kansai (KIX) and how helpful the young Japanese ladies were, even with broken English.

Enjoy your trip :)

I think that little piece of paper is what one would technically call a tourist visa :-)

I know all I need to know to survive:

"Excuse me, do you speak English?" in Japanese

"Boyfriend. Boyfriend! Tell me what that says!"

ah, then you are on time for the long holiday (May 3-5) :)

and carhill's right, you don't need a visa if you are a US citizen if you're gonna stay for only a week.

They do it (the paper thingie) when you go through immigration at the airport. I've had Russian, Belorussian and Ukranian visas and those are far different, requiring the passport to go to the consulate and then be registered in-country. Japan is actually easier than Australia, where a US citizen needs an ETA (electronic travel authority) and the name on it better match the passport precisely ;)
